March.10, 2025

In Memoriam

Brothers and Sisters,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic passing of Brother Francisco Ruiz-Reyes of Carpenters Local 1, who lost his life in a jobsite accident on February 25. Brother Ruiz was a 10-year member of our Union who was working on a residential project on the west side of Chicago when the tragic accident occurred. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

You may leave a condolence for Brother Ruiz on our website here.

May his passing serve as a reminder to always check your surroundings at work and be hypervigilant about safety at all times.

In solidarity,

Kevin McLaughlin

Executive-Secretary-Treasurer

- Making Noise -

During Women in Construction week, our Sisters converged on the state capitals in Illinois and Missouri to lobby lawmakers. Policies that bolster apprenticeship programs and support union labor can open doors for everyone, including women, to make a career in the construction trades. We were fortunate to have UBC Sisters in the Brotherhood Director Sandra Rodriguez join us in the effort. Thank you to those who shared their personal stories and stood toe-to-toe with legislators to make the Carpenters Union heard.

- In Tune -

Union Carpenters with Midwest Drywall are building the new Dr. James Hurd Recital Hall for Washburn University in Topeka, KS. This beautiful 175-seat space will host musical performances and be able to record acts with leading-edge technology.

- Nice Work -

Some of our apprentices joined Local 1889 Rep Steve Harczos and Training Center Instructor Jason Shore to install these acoustical ceiling tiles at the Elmhurst Illinois American Legion. It's great when apprentices can receive on the job training and help out area veterans at the same time!

- On the Job -

Performance Food Group, one of North America’s largest food distributors, is investing nearly $120 million into this new facility in North St. Louis County. A small army of carpenters and millwrights are building the 350,000-square-foot cold storage and distribution center, providing food to PFG’s 1,500 local customers.
