Subject: Membership Monday: Merry Christmas ... and Get Trained on Mass Timber!

Dec. 23, 2024

On Behalf of EST Kevin McLaughlin, MACRC Leadership and staff, we wish you and your families a Merry Christmas!

- High Rise -

You can't be afraid of heights in this work! Check out the sea of scaffolding our members with BrandSafway are assembling at the old Thompson Center building in downtown Chicago. Our members' expert handiwork can be seen from street level next time you're in the in neighborhood. Truly a site to behold!

- On Campus -

Union Carpenters with Sircal Construction are working on a new research building south of Columbia. When completed, the Middlebush Building will sit next door to another union-built university research facility.

- Manpower -

Union Carpenters with Denk & Roche, Leopardo, and Siteline are renovating Covenant Living in Northbrook. The senior living community features 1, 2, & 3 bedroom apartments, cottages, and quadruplex homes. MACRC reps visited recently to provide lunch and thank the members for their hard work. Always great to see residential work by our elite Union Carpenters!

- Senior Living -

Union Carpenters with River City Drywall are helping to bring this retirement community to North St. Louis County. Jennings Place is under expansion, adding more than 40 new apartments. Safe and affordable housing for senior citizens on a budget is much needed all over the country.

- Shame on 'Em -

Carpenters Local 1889 has been picketing/bannering/handbilling Home Goods and Burlington Coat Factory locations in Wheaton and Downers Grove during the holiday shopping season for hiring contractors who undercut our hard-fought area standards.

- Partners -

Our valued contracting partners are committed to using skilled, union labor on the job, giving all of us the careers we have today. In St. Louis, our Contractor Breakfast is a chance to say ‘thank you’ and to keep everyone updated on the latest developments within the Carpenters Union. Here’s to continued success in the year ahead.

Helping Hands: Local 58 Reps Matt Oclon and Alex Perez joined with apprentice Justin Zara to help out a 50-year resident of Hoffman Estates who needed a handrail replaced. The village provided the materials and the 58 crew provided the volunteer labor. It is great to see our members giving back to our communities and showing their holiday spirit!

Do You Know Mass Timber?

Mass Timber is expected to start making an impact in the St. Louis market soon. A lot of work - and many man-hours - will be coming our way, but only if our members are properly trained on this emerging sector of our industry.

To ensure readiness, members should begin preparing by completing the following essential training qualifications and certifications: MEWP / Rough Terrain / Signaling / Rigging Awareness / Rigging Qualification (recommended for lead persons) / Mass Timber Training.

Visit the St. Louis campus training page. For any questions or to enroll, please contact Ed Doyle at 314-457-8300.
