Charting Course
Hundreds of Union Carpenters are gathered in Las Vegas this week for the UBC 2025 General Convention. Occurring every five years, this assembly elects leadership and charts the United Brotherhood's course for the foreseeable future. Our first national convention was held in 1881 in Chicago, giving us 144 years of unwavering commitment to the principles of solidarity and protecting rights for America's working class.
| | A $30.5 million Joint Operations Center is being built in Lee's Summit. Signatory contractor 4Gen is hanging the metal studs and exterior sheeting. This 43,600-sqaure-foot facility will function as central command for all emergencies, disaster coordination and day-to-day emergency responses within the city. | | In the heart of St. Louis’ Delmar Loop, this 259-unit complex is sure to be a favorite with students attending nearby Washington University. We’re working with Brinkmann Constructors, Titan, Jacobsmeyer and Concrete Strategies to get the five-story apartment building on the market next summer…and we were happy to stop by and serve up some lunch for this busy crew! | | Local 13 had a quick win on the front lines for Area Standards against Belfor Property Registration by the UIC campus. Signatory contractor JLDC was awarded the work. We will not stand aside while working families are being harmed. Strong Alone Unstoppable Together! | | Our area Reps in Central Missouri recently held an externship with local educators and school counselors. These events reach school staff directly and show how impactful the Carpenters apprenticeship can be. College isn't for everyone and our union gives all who join lifelong skills to perform this trade at its highest degree, plus our apprentices earn while they learn without astronomical student debt. | | Here are two more apprentices making the most of Cub Club. Congrats to Mike May and Austin Kastning of Local 250 for completing all the required levels and earning our top reward: a year of free dues! This is a major achievement that requires mentoring apprentices, participating in multiple job actions and volunteer projects, taking skill advancement classes, and so much more. Local 250 President Joel Pogose and Rep Ryan Reitman presented the rewards at Local 250's recent meeting. Check out Cub Club for yourself and reap the rewards! | | The 2025 Chicago Labor Day Parade & Eddie Fest is on Sept. 6 this year! Join us for a full day of fun, food, live music, craft vendors, bounce houses, and games + activities for all ages! | | Feds Look to Slow Down Solar, Wind Construction | | Protecting Ourselves During Summer's Extreme Heat | | Game On: Fun time for our members (including some who traveled from Chicago) for Carpenters Day at Busch Stadium. Cards vs. Cubs games are always a crowd pleaser and make for some great summer memories! | |
Milestone: It was a special moment last week when Local 174 honored member Ed Windett's 75 years of membership on his 93rd birthday. Ed's son, Jeff, a 37-year member, made the trip from Florida to celebrate his dad's milestone, along with Assistant to the EST Joe Weber. (In 1957, Ed helped build the house where Joe grew up!) It was a pleasure to hear Ed talk about his long career as a Union Carpenter and we'd like to congratulate him on his many years of dedicated service!
