Standing Up to Tax Fraud

Every year during tax season, Carpenters around the country stage an awareness campaign to crack down on fraudulent contractors who are paying under the table, ripping off workers and cheating on their employment taxes. Here in our Mid-America Regional Council, you'll see us all this week at city halls, construction sites and state capitals making noise. Tax fraud and wage theft are an unacceptable black eye to our entire industry and it deserves everyone's attention. Learn more at StopTaxFraud.net

- Bad Business -

Shame on the Federal Aviation Administration for contributing to the erosion of our area standards. Forge Construction has been hired by SomeraRoad Inc. to remodel this FAA office in Kansas City. Forge has contracted out carpenter work to companies with a long history of using sub-contractors who don’t pay area standard wages, provide family healthcare, or pension retirement benefits to their carpenters. On most federally funded projects, prevailing wage requirements are standard. Why is this 80,000 square foot project not subject to those wage requirements? Is the FAA attempting to bypass taxpayer protections?

- Champs -

Competitions are in full swing for our future tradesmen lately. We helped judge a student competition at Cape Girardeau Training Center, where the top prizes were Milwaukee cordless tools. Winners of the contest will face off this summer at the national Skills USA competition. Also, congratulations to South Tech, winners of this year’s Competition in a Box. Hosted at our St. Louis training center, this annual matchup tests students' math, blueprint, team building and construction skills. Competitions like these offer a lot of fun, while teaching some valuable real-life lessons.

- Back to School -

Students at Cahokia, Illinois High School will have a new home next year. We’re working with Poettker Construction to build this 180,000-square-foot school on 48 acres donated by the city. It’s replacing a long-outdated high school and will have enough room to grow student enrollment in the years to come.

- Bank Job -

Folks in South St. Louis County can grab some dough – and donuts – when this work wraps up soon. It’ll be home to Southern Bank’s newest location, plus a Dunkin’ Donuts conveniently located in back. Union Carpenters with Russell Construction and Elite Interiors are getting the job done.

The latest issue of the UBC's Carpenter Magazine is out now! Catch up with what your Brothers and Sisters across the country have been working on. Plus, this issue is packed with stories that show union carpenters are building more than just structures—we’re building power.

Honored: Congrats to MACRC Workforce Development Director Jonathan Jones on receiving the Union Outreach Award from the African American Contractors Association. Jonathan is focused on building relationships with contractor associations to recruit more companies becoming signatory with our Regional Council and provide more work opportunities for members. His efforts are paying off. Keep up the good work!

The MACRC Training Program held an Apprentice Orientation this past Saturday, where discussion topics included the history of the union, the hierarchy, paying dues, our benefits, how to check hours, and everything in between. I have just a few photos if you would like to share. Special thanks to instructor John Husnick and Coordinator Pat Sowers for leading the Orientation, and to Safety Director Al Jotautas and Assistant Safety Director Butch Sikora for presenting. #UnionStrong
