Moderator's Note: National Water Development Agency (NWDA) and other proponents of Interlinking of rivers project seem to be against water cycle. They have not learnt any lesson from the drying up of the Aral sea due to the diversion of two Siberian rivers by the USSR government. The Economic Survey 2023-24 refers to Ken-Betwa river link as the first river link as part of five river link projects of National Perspective Plan (NPP) under implementation that was approved in 2021 with central support of Rs 39, 317 crore to be implemented jointly by MP, UP & union governments.
NWDA's ‘surplus river and deficit river' claim about Ken and Betwa respectively is not based on any scientific assessment of the river basin or sub-basin. basin. Can floods in a river be equated with surplus river and drought with deficit river? Ken river flows through Panna in MP, and the Betwa river runs through MP and UP. Can water in the Betwa be increased by diverting it and linking it with the Ken, the so-called surplus river according to NWDA? Isn't the claim of Ken being a surplus river verifiable?
Isn't increasing the area of irrigation through Ken-Betwa link a pipe dream like Kosi-Mechi river link project in Bihar and Nepal, Godavari-Cauvery river link project and Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal river link project?
