errors setting/changing vm owner

hello -
i installed the 0.11.2-rc1 release successfully (afaict) onto an ubuntu 14.04 host (w/mysql). most things seem to be working properly but i am getting an error when trying to change the owner of a vm or import a vm while attaching an owner.
on the "Change Owner" page (which apparently has the mistaken page title of "Rename Virtual Machine") the dropdown that i expected from gwm .7 is not there. and when i enter a user in the text field that is there instead and click "Save" it returns:
This field is required.
on the "Orphaned Virtual Machines" page there is also no dropdown, and similarly when i enter a user's name and hit "Update Selected" it throws back:
owner
This field is required.
in neither case is the change made.
anyone else experiencing this or is it just me? in the latter case, any pointers on where to look to track this down (nothing shows up in apache's error.log, unclear where else i should check)? let me know if output from the install would be helpful.
