Dear WG5 Members,

I hope this message finds you well.

On behalf of Dr. Gerda Sula, I am sharing with you the draft version of the booklet for teachers, which was discussed during our Santorini meeting. The document still requires some adjustments, including the addition of infographics to enhance user-friendliness. While efforts have been made to simplify the language, some sections may still feel too academic.

The annexes on resources and templates are currently empty, as we believe our network has plenty of material to fill these sections.

We would greatly appreciate your feedback and suggestions to improve the content and usability of the booklet. Please feel free to share your thoughts or propose any modifications.

Looking forward to your valuable input!

Best regards,
Dorina

Thanks alot for sharing the booklet it is definitely promising resource. It is well-structured, addressing theoretical foundations, practical strategies, and implementation with clear categories like cognitive, social, and kinesthetic games. The emphasis on inclusive game design and the thoughtful integration of both digital and non-digital options ensure accessibility and relevance for diverse classrooms. The chapter on cultural relevance effectively highlights the importance of connecting games to students' backgrounds, while the sections on formative assessment and teacher creativity provide actionable insights for meaningful learning. This resource is both practical and inspiring for educators. I have the following suggestions and would be happy to work on them if you like:

  • Although challenges are discussed, practical solutions could be more detailed, such as case studies or testimonials from teachers who have successfully implemented game-based learning.
  • The "Annexes" could include more diverse templates, such as lesson plans or step-by-step instructions for a few highlighted games, to save preparation time for teachers.
  • The references lean toward classic theories and a few recent works; integrating insights from newer studies or pilot programs on gamification in primary education could add depth.

Warm Regards,

Dr. Mennatullah Hendawy

Dear Mennatullah,

Thank you so much for reading carefully the document and for the constructive feedback. The booklet should definitely be a joint effort, in the spirit of COST action. So yes, please, do work on the proposed changes, and you will be one of the co-authors.

This goes to all the colleagues in our working group-if you find that you can contribute to the improvement of the draft, please reach out

Best, Gerda

Dear Dr. Gerda,

First of all, thank you so much for preparing the booklet. It will be definitely a useful resource. The booklet effectively covers game-based learning, providing insights on cognitive and emotional development, game types, and inclusive and culturally relevant designs. Practical examples like "Jumping Math" and "Timeline Relay" make applications tangible. On the other hand, I have some recommendations as follows for further improvement:

  1. The dense text structure might overwhelm some readers and reduce engagement. To address this, we can consider incorporating visuals such as icons, pictures, flowcharts, infographics, and tables. For example, icons could represent different game types, while a flowchart might illustrate the steps for implementing a game-based activity. These enhancements would make the document more visually appealing and user-friendly. (I would be pleased to contribute to this matter)

  1. Teachers might find it challenging to translate the general guidelines into actionable steps. To resolve this, we can include a clear, step-by-step framework for selecting, customizing, and implementing games. For example:

                              I.              Identify learning objectives.

                            II.              Choose a game type.

III.              Customize the game for inclusivity.

                         IV.              Facilitate gameplay.

                           V.              Reflect and assess outcomes.

Providing this structured guidance will make it easier for educators to apply the content in their classrooms.

  1. The current format resembles an academic paper as Dorina said in her e-mail as well, which might discourage some educators. Adding colorful sidebars for quick tips, case studies, or teacher quotes can make the document more engaging. We can consider including QR codes that link to digital resources, video tutorials, or downloadable templates.

  1. The document can be supported with a dedicated section to guide teachers in systematically creating or adapting games for their classrooms. Adding a “Design Your Own Game” section with templates, brainstorming prompts, and examples of game mechanics would empower teachers to develop customized games aligned with their educational goals.

  1. While formative assessment strategies are mentioned in page 12, actionable tools can be added. Including rubrics, checklists, and templates for assessing student engagement, collaboration, and learning outcomes would provide practical support for educators.

Dear colleagues,
here is my modest contribution to the booklet.
I marked it all yellow, so that you can find it easily. Of course, you
are welcome to accept or decline my suggestions, but also move the
paragraphs to some other place within the booklet, where you would find
them more appropriate.
Sincerely,
Milica

Dear all,

I find Prof. Öztürk suggestions very important: I also intended to give my contribution but, unfortunately, I was sick all the sendo half of december.

To Prof. Öztürk tips, I would add that, in my opinion, to name games (i.e commercial games) could be of no help for a reader that does not know that games. Furthermore, the name of games that we buy may vary from language to language. I would suggest to describe the strategy of a game, or the dynamic, rather than to just provide the name.

@Dorina, Barbara: if you plan a meeting via Zoom/teams/… to edit the Booklet, I would be happy to participate.

Greetings from Italy
