GameTable WG2 Introductory Meeting

Dear Working Group 2 members,

As the leaders of Working Group 2 (Cultural Heritage of Games) of GameTable, Tim and I would like to welcome you to the group and express our excitement to collaborate with you over the next four years!

For those of you who may not have been able to attend the pre-meeting or the Management Committee meeting in October, there are two in-person meetings in 2024 where we will have the opportunity to meet in person:

Kickoff meeting: 29–30 January, Leiden, the Netherlands

Working Group 2 meeting: 3 May, Mustafapaşa, Turkey

More details about those meetings will be forthcoming.

The kickoff meeting will focus broadly on the goals of GameTable as a whole and begin the process of coordinating between the Working Groups. During our Working Group meeting in Turkey, we will discuss how to mobilize our expertise to achieve these goals.

However, May is a long way away, so we would like to get started with the process of getting to know everyone, figuring out what potential collaborations exist, and determining what avenues of research people are interested in contributing to.

For this purpose we are organizing a virtual meeting on Thursday, 14 December from 10:00–16:00 CET to start getting things moving. In this meeting, we are asking that you give a brief five-minute talk about your research as it relates to games. 

As you are thinking about how to frame your research, we also ask you to think about your research strengths and how they relate to some of the goals of the action, such as:

Data collection on games

Data management and preservation strategies

Application of AI to archaeological/historical/cultural research questions

Computational methods

If you are unable to attend, you also can record a video introduction. 

After we're through the introductions, we will facilitate a discussion to identify the best ways to proceed with respect to everyone's strengths and goals, and set things in motion for next steps.

Please let us know by 16 November if you will plan to introduce yourself at this meeting. We are looking forward to meeting you all very soon!

Dear Branislav (and all),

This is a great idea in principle, but I do think it is rather to soon before the deadline to put something together (even though I see they extended the deadline to Monday 13 November). This is, however, something I am absolutely in favor of doing for one of the future EAA meetings (Belgrade 2025 or Athens 2026?). It's also difficult to fit this into the budget for GP1 now that things are already set, but if it is something we want to pursue in coming years, we can make sure there is money for it. 

If a group of us was planning to attend EAA and wanted to put together a games-themed session I'd be in support of it, but I'm not sure we could get any money from the GameTable budget for it. There's the chance that money could become available for a dissemination grant based on how much is spent on the kickoff and working group meetings, but this is not guaranteed.

So, to sum up, if someone would like to organize a session for EAA Rome on games before Monday, I say please do it and feel free to use this GoogleGroup to do so! We absolutely should be using COST to make the kinds of connections to do these things. But I don't think we can commit to using COST resources for it this year.

Dear Crist and all Collegues, 

Glad to join WG2 of GameTable, such a challenging Cost Action, and I ' m more than sure that everyone of us will do her/his best to reach high achievements and have a strong network that will longly last.  

I totally agree with you to have  the Kick off meeting at 14 December and have a very short presentation. 

I just wanted to make a note, it' s goint to be a very long meeting 10.00 - 16.00, and of course if it is going to be 5 min. Presentation for everyone , it. will last so long...

Can we make it shorter? I ' m  sceptic if everyone is going to participatice during all the meeting course. 

I propose to have a google sheet, where everyone can write, name, surname, the affiliation and the job title, as well as a very short bio, so we can read and get know each other before the meeting. This file can be used to be published in the platform/ website of the CA as well.  During the meeting, which may last 1- 1.5 hour, we just introduce ourselves, ( name, affiliation and 2 sentences of what out job is). So the rest of the meeting we can deal with what the WG tasks are and how we will proceed further.

Just a propose, but still I am ok, with whatever decided

We will see how many people say they are coming to determine exactly how long the meeting will be, and will coordinate the schedule once we've heard from everyone. This is why we set the schedule for the 16th. 
This meeting is meant to understand who everyone is and to start conversations. We are not yet at a stage where tasks will be assigned. We want to assess everyone's strengths in order to determine how to proceed, and start introducing everyone to some preliminary thoughts.

Certainly, a document where we can refer to  everyone's speciality is appropriate, and something we will probably develop. While this information should have already been included in the Working Group applications, things may not have been clear at that stage and I don't think enough information is there in a lot of them. I think it will be better to meet first and talk about what competencies and research avenues are most applicable.

Also, this email serves as a reminder to please let us know if you will attend the 14 December meeting by 16 November!

Dear Working Group 2 members,

 

As the leaders of Working Group 2 (Cultural Heritage of Games) of GameTable, Tim and I would like to welcome you to the group and express our excitement to collaborate with you over the next four years!

 

For those of you who may not have been able to attend the pre-meeting or the Management Committee meeting in October, there are two in-person meetings in 2024 where we will have the opportunity to meet in person:

 

Kickoff meeting: 29–30 January, Leiden, the Netherlands

Working Group 2 meeting: 3 May, Mustafapaşa, Turkey

 

More details about those meetings will be forthcoming.

 

The kickoff meeting will focus broadly on the goals of GameTable as a whole and begin the process of coordinating between the Working Groups. During our Working Group meeting in Turkey, we will discuss how to mobilize our expertise to achieve these goals.

 

However, May is a long way away, so we would like to get started with the process of getting to know everyone, figuring out what potential collaborations exist, and determining what avenues of research people are interested in contributing to.

 

For this purpose we are organizing a virtual meeting on Thursday, 14 December from 10:00–16:00 CET to start getting things moving. In this meeting, we are asking that you give a brief five-minute talk about your research as it relates to games. 

 

As you are thinking about how to frame your research, we also ask you to think about your research strengths and how they relate to some of the goals of the action, such as:

 

Data collection on games

Data management and preservation strategies

Application of AI to archaeological/historical/cultural research questions

Computational methods

 

If you are unable to attend, you also can record a video introduction. 

 

After we're through the introductions, we will facilitate a discussion to identify the best ways to proceed with respect to everyone's strengths and goals, and set things in motion for next steps.

 

Please let us know by 16 November if you will plan to introduce yourself at this meeting. We are looking forward to meeting you all very soon!
