Working title:
Moving along: game pieces in material culture
Editors:
Walter Crist
Alex de Voogt
Call for papers:
Playing pieces are a crucial element of board games that suffer from a paucity of scholarly research. To increase our understanding of the role of game pieces in the history of board games, we invite papers that explore the interactions between game pieces and game boards both in social-cultural and functional ways from antiquity to the present. For instance, the interaction may take place between the pieces and the board, leaving behind use wear; or, between the pieces and the players, creating meaning. We seek papers that provide descriptions of game pieces and possible typologies to interpretations of these variations across linguistic and socio-cultural barriers.
Chapter topics may include but are not limited to the consequences of game piece material for the interpretation of game rules, material preferences for game pieces across cultures, or how players interact with game pieces depending on their design and material. An exploration of these topics may take the form of a case study of a particular game or a specific place, or a comparison between different games, periods or cultures.
The aim of this book is to help understand game piece developments over time and assist in the interpretation of game pieces using both material culture, ethnographic and ethnoarchaeological approaches.
Timeline:
Intentions to contribute and preliminary titles/topics are requested by October 1, 2024.
In December the editors will present their own work on this topic and hold a discussion forum so that contributors may workshop their ideas and use this material as inspiration for their abstract, which is due by Jan 1, 2025.
First draft of a chapter is due for peer review on Sept 1, 2025.
