Some of you might be interested in this article from Gamasutra.com
called "Rethinking Carrots: A New Method For Measuring What Players
Find Most Rewarding and Motivating About Your Game."

I'm working my way through it now, but wanted to go ahead and share it
with y'all.

Here's a very brief summary of what the 8-page article discusses:
"Our research shows that this underlying motivational energy takes the
form of three basic psychological needs: Those of competence, autonomy,
and relatedness, which comprise the major components of what we call
the Player Experience of Need Satisfaction (PENS). "

We've discussed how to make a game that is used for learning attractive
to play. This article may provide some insight.
