The symposium will be called Games4Learning: A Conversation about Our
Future.
April date was cancelled because of a conflict with a RENCI event.
After much debate and info-gathering, the symposium will be held in
early October 2007. It will be held in the afternoon. Stay tuned for a
specific date.
Before the half-day symposium, we'll offer opportunities for
registrants to get their creative juices flowing by participating in
one or more activities including a tour of the computer science
department's virtual reality lab. This will give novices a chance to
see some technologies that might be applied to a game environment.
Co-sponsors to date include the Office of Research Development, the
University Library, the Health Sciences Library, and the Odum
Institute's Working Group on the Internet and the Social Sciences.
Most are contributing some money. I hope we can get co-sponsorship
from the Department of Computer Science and RENCI. In addition, I've
asked the Department of Sociology and the School of Public Health if
they will co-sponsor. Suggestions for other co-sponsors would be
welcomed. If you have specific names, let me know.
I'm collecting titles of books that the Bull's Head might offer for
sale at a book table during the symposium. If you have suggestions,
please let me know. Two that will be on the list are _What Video Games
Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy_ by James Gee and
_Ender's Game_ by Orson Scott Card. The latter is a well-known sci-fi
novel (by one of my favorite authors, coincidentally :-)). Think
creatively about what books might relate to this topic.
