Sorry I never got an e-mail update on this thread. My spam must have
ate it. In 3.5 Fighters get one BONUS feat at first level. They don't
get any automatic feats. So in a Human Warriors case at 1st level he
would start with 1 feat for being first level, 1 feat for being a
human, and one BONUS feat for being a fighter for a total of 3.
Fighters get more bonus feats than most classes, they receive an
additional one at second level as well.
In total a 4th level Human fighter should have 6 feats.

So a 3rd level fighter would have 4 feats and a 4th has 6?

Here is how the feat progression works. Humans get one additional feat
at first level.
