Bonjour,
Hello,
I'm very happy that so quickly we've become 30!
Il se peut que vous savez déjà
Maybe you know already
But we have discovered a new painting of Marais much younger than the
other known painting
details ici/here :

(For the English speaking part of our list shout out if you want
details (summary) of the page listed above.)

I was not aware of your discovery. Superb detective work! Anglophones
definitely should be made aware of this work. Please post a summary in
English.

Best wishes.

Hello to all the English speaking part of this list!
Here I will make succinct resumé of the research that we have done on
the Marais painting as described here :
http://www.a2violes.com/new/html/pages/recherches/1.html
Two years ago my wife bought and old 17th century French viol. Many
people, including instrument makers said that the instrument just
might be the same that appears in a painting that is now in the museum
of the castle of Blois.
A few years before when I wrote my feature article on Marais for
Goldberg :
http://www.goldbergweb.com/en/magazine/composers/2003/12/18206.php
I had brought up the subject (in a little article in the article) that
the painting in Blois was not Schenck as previously thought and was
probably Marais.
In February 2006 we spent the whole day in Blois looking at the
painting and consulting the archives. We decided that my wife's viol
was very similar but not the same as the one in the painting.
Here are the tons of pictures of the painting at close range as well
as my wife's viol (in the suitcase "viol")
http://www.a2violes.com/blois/
The archives revealed that in fact when the painting was acquired,
before 1861 it was described as being "Marin Marais" and by the
painter Jean Dieu dit Saint Jean.
Remember this was at a time when nobody cared for the viol or knew
about Marais!
Many museum records as well as local newspapers repeated this until in
1960 other people became involved.
Firstly the art historian Miromonde in 1965 saw only 6 stings on the
viol (there are very clearly 7 look at my own photos from above) and
as the viol was in a similar position (posed on a chair) to an
engraving of Schenck by his brother Pieter many stated that the
painting was a picture of Schenck by the painter Netscher.
Nobody thought of verifying this wild speculation, simple things like
looking at the facial features (Schenck doesn't look anything like
Marais, take a look at the engraving in the site listed above at the
beginning of this post).
In fact an article had been published (an subsequently overlooked) by
a certain Tessier in 1924, where he again confirms the painting is
Marais and finds the signature of the painter.
This signature is very obscure, and I subsequently succeeded in
catching it by literally taking hundreds of close range digital
pictures. The result is also on the site mentioned above.
Jean Dieu the painter was a close friend of Marais. He was godfather
to Jean-Louis Marais one of Marais' sons.
Now that all of this had been established with crystal clarity the
dating of the painting was in question. Until we luckily found a book
written by Jal in 1867 before the Parisian archives were burnt. He
copies out all of Jean Dieu's records, and we discover that he was
buried in the St. gervais church in 1695.
Therefore the painting was probably made before Marais published his
first book of viol pieces. Why do you ask?
Because on top of all, the music lying underneath his viol is a
manuscript copy of the third prelude in his first book. It is even
title "Prelude de Mr Marais"!
In any case the French press went wild about this. Florence Getreau
published a long article for the Centre Musique de Baroque de
Versailles in their book about Marais "Grandes Journées". An article I
cosigned with the historian Corinne Vaast is forthcoming for Musique-
Images-Instruments. We were also invited this year to present Marais'
music at the castle in Blois.
If you have any questions, or want more details just shout out!

Many thanks for this post. I'm not surprised the French press "went
wild." I'd be surprised if the story doesn't make a splash in the
Anglophone gamba world. The evidence trail has intrinsic drama with so
many questions still to be answered: was your viol made by the same
luthier as the one belonging to Marais? What happened to Marais' viol,
and where has yours been all these years? Whose idea was it to include
the manuscript in the painting and why? In the hands of a good writer,
who knows, perhaps "Matins II."

Resumé pour nos francophones

A little resumé in English, Fanchon rightly points out that this
painting is on the new Jordi Savall album as well as an old one in
1977.

In fact I put it on our Marais album before Jordi did :

http://www4.fnac.com/Shelf/article.aspx?PRID=1828749&OrderInSession=1&Mn=3&Mu=-13&SID=f8f2f6ec-6c47-6bc7-f1b0-84a6b25cfba6&TTL=020920072123&Origin=FnacFR&Ra=-29&To=0&Nu=2&UID=1414B84A6-EBE4-DE8D-F8E3-3AFCCEC7C1BD&Fr=0

Here is the back cover and unlike the recent Savall album where the
painting is still attributed to Netscher on ours it is attributed to
the correct painter, Jean Dieu dit Saint Jean

http://www.a2violes.com/new/html/pages/disco/son/marais_coffret.html

respectives enregistrements.

Here is the article from the magazine "Diapason" in October 2006

http://www.a2violes.com/new/html/images/diapason.jpg

After posting the previous message I realised that in fact on the back
cover of my CD the painter is "anonymous". It is attributed to Jean
Dieu dit Saint Jean inside the booklet.
