I've been using btrfs for an external disk for a while now, I've had a couple of kernel panics here and there when pulling the cable when it wasn't fully ready. My fault really, but it I think it should fail gracefully/silently rather than crashing the system. 3.4 should be pushed as an update to fedora tomorrow or soon at least, so hopefully that will be solved.
I had it as my main FS for a while. I don't remember having any major problems with it, but as I've got an SSD, ext4 was more performant by default at the time (this may have changed, not sure).
I say go for it if you don't have an ssd (although even if you do, you can probably tune it some, so that performance isn't an issue).
