Hey folks,

Just a reminder

The AGM will take place Tuesday 9th October, at 7.00pm in the John Hume Building, room JH1,
Please find the details of the Constitutional ballots included here and also please find attached a copy of the existing
Galway Cycle Constitution.
We hope to see you all there and are looking for people to get involved as always.
(see
http://www.nuim.ie/location/webmaps/index.shtml to find the John Hume building).

The agenda for the night is as follows:

Agenda

  • Talk from DSI (Kathleen)
  • Talks from the chosen 5 charities (listed below)
  • Voting on Charity (Note: Votes may only be cast by those who have participated in a previous cycle)
  • Voting in of this years’ committee
  • Financial report
  • Constitutional Ballots:

    Item 1

Article 2.4)              While there are no limitations as to whom the beneficiary charity can be, tradition to date dictates that the chosen charity should be a children’s charity or that the funds raised be used specifically for a project that will benefit children. Who the beneficiary is and how well they are known will obviously affect to some extent the willingness of the public to donate.

    Shall be replaced with:

Article 2.4)              The charity shall be an Irish based charity with the proceeds being spent on projects in the island of Ireland. While there are no other limitations, tradition to date dictates that the chosen charity should be a children’s charity or that the funds raised be used specifically for a project that will benefit children. Who the beneficiary is and how well they are known will obviously affect to some extent the willingness of the public to donate.

This is to bring the constitution in line with the governance of tradition and avoid wasting the time and efforts of non-Irish charities who traditionally have failed in efforts for selection.

    Item 2

That any changes to the constitution strictly necessary to allow the operation of the Maynooth Students for Charity Galway Cycle as a club within the Student’s Union of the college can be made by the Committee.

This mainly pertains but not limited to the positions defined in the constitution and the formation of a subcommittee entirely of students.

    Item 3

Election of a constitutional review committee to undertake an updating of the constitution for ratification at next year’s AGM

  • AOB

Each of the five charities will give a brief 5 minute presentation and we will then have a vote (PR selection system 1to5) to select one charity to receive the support of the Maynooth Students for Charity, Galway Cycle 2013.

The committee members for 2013 will also be decided upon and we will be taking suggestions for future fundraisers.

If you would like to get involved with the committee this year and think you can lend a hand to the enthusiastic team behind all the fun, please do come along and make yourself known!

Hope to see you all there,

The Galway Cycle Committee 2012

The shortlisted charities (from your votes) are:

  • Barretstown
  • Console
  • ISPCC
  • Jack and Jill
  • The Katie Nugent Fund

Barrettstown
Barretstown changes the lives of children and families affected by childhood cancer and other serious illnesses. Through a unique programme delivered on site in the beautiful surroundings of Barretstown castle, children who have been battling a serious illness learn to have fun again, regain confidence, self esteem and make a lot of new friends. Families draw strength from others facing the same challenges as they do. They too make friends for life.

The Barretstown programme is endorsed by medical professionals and avidly supported by leading hospitals such as Our Ladys Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin and Cork University Hospital.

Totally self funded Barretstown needs to raise €5 million a year to continue providing this vital, life changing service to families most in need.

Console
Console was established in 2002 by Paul Kelly after he had experienced the grief of losing a loved one by Suicide. Through his loss, Paul recognised a need for a dedicated Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention Service here in Ireland.
Since then Console has developed into a National Organisation supporting people in Suicidal Crisis and those Bereaved by Suicide through Professional Counselling, Support and Helpline Services.
Console is a National Service with Centres in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Athlone, Wexford and Kildare.
Console works with the Families in the aftermath of a suicide. The service Console offer has been seen first-hand by some of our members.  The project we would be helping bring to life is called SILVERCLOUD, an online counselling service. This will reach out to people all over the country.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children
The ISPCC provides a range of independent and unique services which are both preventative and empowering in nature.
ISPCC Childline Service
Ireland’s only free, confidential listening service for children available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
          Receives zero government funding
Received over 2,300 calls a day in 2011 however due to lack of funding Childline could only answer 65% of calls
          Thousands of calls relate to:
Abuse, suicide, depression and self-harm; literally matters of life and death
Substance abuse, domestic violence, bullying and critical information on health and sexuality

Galway Cycle 2013 can help Childline reach the 800 voices a day that are not being heard.

Jack and Jill Foundation

Based in Johnstown, Co Kildare and working nationally, Jack and Jill is there for children who have severe disabilities and life threatening illnesses. Most of the people they fund live either very short lives or live with significant intellectual and physical disabilities. Their care is intensive and draining of a family's own natural energy and resources. J and J go into homes with nurses and care assistants to help. They provide direct respite in the family home to allow people get a night's sleep or  go shopping.  In short, they provide care that allows a family to manage their child at home and still have some room to recover from the demands of 24 hour care. They do trojan work . They also have some wonderful fundraising initiatives which could  be woven into our efforts in 2013 such as collecting old mobile phones, crutches and old bus tickets.

The Katie Nugent Fund

In May 2010, after a courageous struggle with leukaemia, Katie Nugent died aged just six. Katie’s illness was a severe trial, not just for this brave little girl, but for her family too.
The Katie Nugent Fund was set up to help other seriously ill children , and their families as they face some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable. It is a charity fund that donates all its proceeds to the CMRF (Childrens Medical and Research Foundation for Crumlin Childrens Hospital). The parents of Katie, Nick & Alice and her sisters Lucy and Lara direct how and where the funds raised are used.
Chemotherapy is supposed to attack the illness but it attacks the spirit too. Through her illness, Katie retained her joie de vivre, and in doing so helped us to remain strong.
