Despiteits lack of memory, the Samsung ML-1610 delivers exceptional text prints with affordable Samsung toner costs. The lines are crisp, clear and have little to no distortion. It prints black and white photos well, but if you are an avid photographer you will want to upgrade. Color is decent for a personal laser printer for those who do not need a lot of color prints. Due to its 2 MB maximum memory large documents or documents containing extensive graphics occasionally stop between pages as the next page is loaded into the memory.

The Samsung ML-1610 is contained within a silver and black colored housing and has perhaps the easiest toner cartridges to replace. Simply open the access panel pull out the drum and slide the old out and the new cartridge in. This printer is light weight at 12 pounds and prints at a quick 16 pages per minute, slower for color documents. Unfortunately the ML-1610 is not Mac compatible, and only has a 1.1 USB connection, which accounts for the slow color printing speed and graphics printing.

The warming time is quite low, and your first page can be out in about 15 seconds, but don't expect this every time. A report on using the Samsung driver and installing this printer on Slackware. =15246It works perfectly fine, although there is a peculiar 'error' logging in /var/log/cups/error_log - 'media tray empty!' after every print job, but it doesn't seem to affect the printer (or CUPS) at all.The 'media try empty' error message is a bug in CUPS, and is fixed from:CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.21rc1 - The USB backend incorrectly reported "media tray empty" (STR #660)

===My experience on Gentoo:Samsung offers an tar.gz package, which contains a GUI installer. The installation is quick and flawlessly. You can use CUPS or LPRng as backend. The installer also offers to install a printer management GUI and to integrate that with KDE/Gnome. (This GUI seems to be able to manage other CUPS printers, too; I didn't try that, however.)The driver package also contains a set of .ppd files among which is one for the ML-1610, appearently for PS Level 3.As the installation went smooth and the printer works fine, I'm setting the status to "Perfectly". Consumables/Refills: Single toner cartridge / 2,000 pages (ships with 1,000-page starter toner cartridge)
