New Exhibition:  A Northern Perspective, paintings by Kevin Breyfogle

Kerredge Gallery October 7 - November 1, 2025

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 9th 6-7:30

HANCOCK, MI – The Copper Country Community Arts Center's Kerredge Gallery has a new display of paintings by Hancock artist, Kevin Breyfogle October 7 through November 1.

Kevin Breyfogle moved to the U.P. from the Chicago area at the age of thirteen. The impression this left on him planted the seed for the subject matter of his work at a young age. Being surrounded by the beauty of the area has led to a lifetime of inspiration for his work on canvas.

Kevin explains, “These oil paintings are a reflection of my love for the wild north. They are a collection from ten years ago to the present, created in my studio on 40 wooded acres north of Hancock. The early mining history of the Copper Country is a subject that motivated a series of paintings using historical black and white photos as inspiration. But my first artistic love is nature and the rugged and sublime beauty of the U.P. and its wildlife. I take photos on location and use them for reference in the studio, usually altering the composition as needed for effect and changing or exaggerating the light, shadow and color or adding wildlife. Occasionally I will paint a scene entirely from my imagination. Hopefully the paintings will allow the viewer to gain a new appreciation for this unique northern landscape.”

As a self-taught artist, Kevin’s style developed through trial and error with influence from many sources. In the last several years he has studied southwestern art and applied a similar approach used in painting desert and mountain scenes to the northern landscape utilizing dramatic composition and bold use of color. The result is transforming what could be considered an ordinary scene into something that imparts an emotional reaction through the manipulation of light, shadow and color. His artistic career includes twelve years as an illustrator as well as creating book covers, music album artwork, murals and portraits. His work hangs in local and national collections and his latest published art can be seen on several covers of Marquette Monthly magazine.

Everyone is welcome to join us for an opening reception on Thursday, October  9th 6-7:30. Refreshments will be served. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 11-6 and Saturday 10-2.
