ANIMAL LIFE, ART FROM THE KALEVALA OPENS AT THE COPPER COUNTRY COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER IN HANCOCK

HANCOCK, MI - Animal Life, Art from the Kalevala opens with a public reception on Saturday, January 25 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. The annual exhibition is in collaboration with the city of Hancock's Heikinpaiva mid-winter celebration. The exhibit is a result of an open call for art inspired by the Finnish epic poem, The Kalevala. Cynthia Coté, curator of the exhibit states, “Animals play a rich and varied and often mystical role in the telling of the stories throughout the Kalevala providing endless ways for artists to interpret and respond through visual art. This year we have an unprecedented number of entries.”

Forty artists participated in this year's call for art with drawings, paintings, pastels, mixed media, wood inlay, lino-cut and copper etching prints, clay, wood and bead sculpture, fiber art, and metal work, Those exhibiting are: Marilyn Agin, Derek Barrigar, Cynthia Cote, Bob Dawson, Mavis Farr, Terri Frew, T. Toj Gajewski, Robin Hammer Meuller, Charlotte Haanela, James C Harju, Pamela Hecht, Lindsey Heiden, Kirstin Hensley, Cynthia Hodges, Jeanne Houle Peters, Lynn Jarvi, Hazel Johnson, Kristi Kangas, Mary Kozmor, Nancy Kromer, Nancy Langston, Stacee Laycoax, Bonnie Loukus, Bethany Lüventhorn, Alice Margerum, Bonnie McLeod, Madhura Mehendale, Clyde Mikkola, Angel Miller, Larry Miller and Nikki Madisen, Lena Miller, Jerome Patryjak, Taära Ryan, jd slack, Barbara Summersett, Krissy Sundstrom, Lori Swanson, Julie Vasold, and Randy Wakeham.

The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 11-6 and Saturdays 10-2. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.  Animal Life will be on display in the Copper Country Community Arts Center's Kerredge Gallery through February 28.
