HANCOCK, MI – The Copper Country Community Arts Center welcomes
Cheryl Perkins, a visiting artist from Rochester, Michigan. She will be exhibiting her bold and colorful paintings of vintage automobiles in pastel as well as landscapes and portraits in oil in the Kerredge Gallery June 5 through 28. Perkins earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1991 from the College for Creative Studies. After graduation, she began her illustration career at Skidmore Studio in Troy, Michigan. She worked as a production free-lance artist for marketing groups and in-house design studios in the Detroit-Metro Area. She was an adjunct faculty member from 2002-2008 at the College for Creative Studies. During a temporary move overseas, she continued her career with commissions and teaching workshops in Warwickshire, United Kingdom. In 2011, she was rehired to teach at the College for Creative Studies where she currently teaches fundamentals of color and design for undergraduate students in the Illustration Department. In addition to teaching, Cheryl works as a commissioned artist specializing in portrait and automotive paintings. Corporate clients include, Corvette Quarterly, Campbell Ewald, and Crain Publications. She is a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Portrait Society of America, and the Palette and Chisel Brush Club. Cheryl’s awards include finalist in the 2016 Michigan Fine Artist Competition, American Institute Study Abroad Fellowship 2018, and finalist in the 2020 Scarab Club Gold Medal Competition.
The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, June 5th from 6:00-7:30pm. There will be a brief gallery talk and refreshments will be served. On Friday June 6 at noon the artist will give a demonstration on pastel painting with a work in progress. Both events are free and open to the public.
This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock and is open Tuesday through Friday 11-6pm and Saturdays 10-2pm.
