HANCOCK, MI – The Copper Country Community Arts Center's new exhibition in the Kerredge Gallery features wood engravings by Wisconsin artist, Tony Drehfal.
“Out of the Wood” includes 20 highly detailed wood engravings of natural objects including plants gone to seed, tree roots, layers of leaves, and scenes from the forest floor inspired by Drehfal’s forays in nature. He explains, “Landscape and the minute details of the natural world serve as the primary inspiration of my wood engravings. Photography, drawing and engraving interweave in my creative process. I take photos often during hikes on woodland trails or from a canoe or kayak near my home on Lumen Lake located in northern Wisconsin. Over time, recurring visual themes accumulate; birch trees, decaying stumps, knots and bark textures, and reflections in woodland ephemeral pools. I then draw and expand a theme in my sketchbook, using photos as reference. There is a point when photo references are put away and the process of drawing and wood engraving take on their own natural cadence towards a resulting print.”
Drehfal is a member of the Wood Engravers Network and the prestigious Society of Wood Engravers founded in 1920.
The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, May 8th from 6:00-7:30. The artist will give a brief talk about his work. Refreshments will be served. The following day on Friday, May 9th the artist will give a demonstration of wood engraving, showing tools, and end grain wood blocks and explaining the various tools and techniques. There is no fee to participate in this activity and learning opportunity.
The exhibition “Out of the Wood” runs May 6 through May 31, 2025. This exhibition and accompanying programs are supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
