"The Company You Choose" pastel paintings by jd slack
Copper Country Community Arts Center Artists Market

HANCOCK, MI – Every month the Copper Country Community Arts Center features an artist in the Artists Market with a display of work and hosts a demonstration by the artist that is free and open to the public. “This program gives us the opportunity to showcase our local artists and gives community members an opportunity to meet artists and learn more about how art is made.” states Director, Cynthia Cote.

The current Featured Artist is jd slack. About this body of work she states, “The title is meant to be many layered. At the most mundane, every painting we choose to live with, to purchase, to put in our homes, becomes our company. Those choices are deeply personal. And for each of us, the artwork in our homes comprises our company, for many of us, our family. But these particular paintings speak even more literally about the creatures (I call them critters) that share our sense of living on earth. And we all have favorites, the ones we choose, whether those are ravens, lions, goats, or moths. These particular critters were my company beginning during COVID, when human company was in short supply, and these animals, with their colorful coats and bright eyes, filled the empty spaces of solitude.  As always, I paint with bright, cheerful colors, bringing my vision to the lives of animals, the critters that we choose to keep us company.”

On August 22, jd will perform the act of painting in public in a demonstration of the ways pastels, technics, and tools get transformed into paintings. Everyone is invited to come and meet her while she is working in the gallery. Questions will be encouraged. Tea and cookies will be served. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 11-6pm and Saturday 10-2pm.
