Okay a bit of background.  Running a phpbb motorcycle forum.  www.ngwclub.com Have been using Gallery for 10 years plus.  Recently ( October/ Nov 2020) upgraded the Forum and the gallery software.  Now none of the pictures show up in the forum posts.  The urls have changed.

For example

The site has over 750,000 posts with about 20,000 images.  I have gone through some of the more active “How Too“  posts an manually updated the pics  but there are thousands still missing.

Are there any patches or other tricks to fix this?   I vaguely remember something about a migration file back when we changed from Gallery 1 to Gallery 2 ???

Thank you!!

There haven't been any updates to the URL handling in the gallery releases, the URLs shouldn't be affected in any way. When I go to the old URL I get a 500 server error. Check in var/logs/YYYY-MM-DD.php to see what the error is. Did you by chance have any custom rewrite rules in the web server and maybe those were lost?

It looks like he changed the physical location of where he put the Gallery files when he "upgraded". This is a no-no because, yes, you will break the URLs because the pictures and everything else is now located in a different location than it was before. As far as I can tell the old URL stated the location was:

http://www.ngwclub.com/albums/ ... etc.

and the new URL states the location as:

https://ngwclub.com/gallery3/var ... etc

by the way, /var/ should *never* appear in the URL. He did things very incorrectly when he upgraded.

I urge people to read and fully understand the instructions at:

http://codex.galleryproject.org/Gallery3:User_guide:Gallery3:Installing_and_upgrading.html#Upgrading

I am working on rewriting these instructions to be a bit more clear and specific as it is obvious some people are having a hard time following them. I hope to have that done in a few days.

In 2010 we had to do a name change of the site.  It went from nakedgoldwingsclub.com to NGWCLUB.com  At the same time we moved the site and performed several updates to the OS.

In 14 we finally managed a Gallery upgrade.  I remember our tech guy (gone now) had to do quite a bit of manipulation to redirect the Picture urls after the upgrade.  There are htaccess files in all 3 of the Gallery directories.  Specifically I remember being told to NEVER delete the Gallery 1 or G2 directories as they were necessary for the system to work. There is one (htaccess) in the Gallery 1 directory dated from March of 15 and some other files that go back to 2010.

As for any recent upgrades, I am not a tech guy so I am certain I followed the instructions line by line as best as I understood them.

Steve,

Oh dear... it sounds like your group's old Gallery installation was taken on its own very unique evolutionary path. I've never heard of keeping the G1 or G2 directories once a successful upgrade to Gallery 3 was made. Unless it was just for an emergency backup in case G3 went badly wrong. In a normal installation G1 and/or G2 can be completely deleted after a successful move to G3. They certainly were never "necessary for the system to work" unless for some reason your tech guy hacked G3 to use them (which is one bizarre concept, but I suppose it could be done if one wanted to for some reason).

It does explain how you ended up with such a bizarre and long URL to access the images in your G3 installation. I congratulate you on being able to get things mostly-working on Gallery 3.1.3 in spite of having to upgrade such a non-standard G2 installation. This allows your group to continue to use of Gallery to continue in the modern era of PHP 7+ and without any dangerous dependencies on the now discontinued Flash routines.

Okay I have good backups so I will play with the G1 and G2 folders and see what happens.  Beside the url’s the other issue I have is that the maintenance tab in Gallery admin goes to a white page.  Nothing loads up.   When I look at the files structure in FTP the error log is huge and without the Maintenance que I have no way of seeing what is in there???  I had a massive semrush Bot attack that lasted over 2 months last year and it loaded up many of my error logs, I suspect this is what has happened here but do not know how to clear it.

Thanks

You should probably ask this question over at phpbb.com, since it sounds like it is not Gallery that can't find your photos. Rather, it is the phpbb forum software that can't find them in messages, since the link destinations have been changed.

I realize this is no help for the current situation, but this is why I use the embeditem plugin.  It references items by their ID in the database rather than by their directory path or URL.  That way if I rearrange the structure of my gallery, the links remain safely linked to the ID of the moved items.  Just an FYI for any and all for the future, as the default approach of using a full URL is problematic.

Note however, that this code may be worth looking at as a possible way to create the necessary redirects to let the old links work, but that would take some digging and better understanding of web aliasing than I have to know if it can be done.

Beo,

Thanks for this tip. I have never implemented the embeditem module but from the sound of it I wish I had many years ago. At the very least it results in shorter URLs for the images, but I do have some questions about it:

1) Does it affect anything when running maintenance tasks, particularly "fix your Gallery"?

2) If I implement the module, will it work retroactively on all 50,000 of my existing images or just on new uploads?

3) What about all the people who have bookmarked images over the years which referenced the full image path? Will those bookmarks still work for them? Currently my Gallery displays this path to an image's location:

https://www.boxartden.com/gallery/index.php/Boxart-Collection/ADAMS/Adams-Atomic-Cannon-1
