Maybe it is gif, try download one and convert it to jpg, see if that helps

Login and click the Admin option at the top of any page, scroll down click Maintenance and then run Rebuild Images

Quite a while back, I migrated stuff from Gallery 2 to Gallery 3. I
noticed recently that a bunch of thumbnails are missing, and clicking on
the broken thumbnail image brings up another broken image icon. Looking in
/var/albums, I see these were gif images. Is there a suggestion on getting
this to work?

Thanks! Did that. It said it rebuilt 0 images. One of the offending pages

Thanks! I'll first try a "reingest" of one of the files and see if that
works. If not, I could do a batch convert of gif to jpeg and reingest.
