Hello all

Just moved my board and then updated the phpbb to 3.3.13.  The Pictures embedded in my forum from the Gallery still show up but the front page of the Gallery is a blank page.  It worked after the move but when we did the phpbb update last night it disappeared.

Any pointers for a direction to start would be appreciated

Steve

Steve,

From what you say the problem is with the update to phpbb -- since everything was working until you upgraded phpbb. The simple fix, depending on your system, is to revert back to using the previous version of phpbb. If that isn't something easily done, then contact the people who provide phpbb and notify them of the problem... it's possible your error report will cause them to look into their code and fix whatever they did to the upgrade to cause it to behave the way it is. Or maybe they can provide you with a link to download the previous version of phpbb so you can re-install it over the update.

PS: When asking for help on a specific problem like this, it's very helpful if you provide a link to your Gallery so we can take a look at it and see if the same problem shows up on our systems.

Thought about the link after I hit the send button. Also running php 8.2 if that has any impact.  Gallery is ngwclub.com/gallery3/

Steve,

I just tried to access you gallery and as you said it simply locks up on a white screen. Did you change to php 8.2 at the same time you moved your gallery? Last I heard there were still a few issues running Gallery under 8.2 -- I'm still running 7. But the previous suggestions I made still apply... but with the addition that it could be that that the new version of phpbb itself does not like 8.2?

No the php 8.2 was pre existing on the server when we moved there last week.  It was working until we did the phpbb update last night.  Unfortunately I am not able to undo that update. It was beyond my skill level so I had hired it out.  The update unpacked is over 3,800 files.

I have been going through the Gallery files via FTP and looking to see which ones may have changed.  So far in the .Var directory the date in the .Logs sub is the only thing that has updated since the change and I believe that is a normal thing? .  Everything else has a date on it from before the update.  So I definitely need to look at the phobb files.  I just do not know where to start

I would restore the files and database from a backup, either yourself via backup / restore in cpanel or via your hosting company if the backup / restore tool (for me this is Acronis Backup) is not available to you.

Regards,

David Armstrong.

I don't know how your installation is set up that installing one piece of PHP software breaks another, and I can only think of two things to check.

1) Did PHPBB patch PHP in any way?
2) Did the PHPBB upgrade mess with any of the ".htaccess" files?

If there's nothing being written to the G3 logs then I'd suspect (2).

Steve,

I can think of two ways to go at this point

1) If you can set your server back to run PHP 7 (at least temporarily). See if Gallery and phpbb start working in that environment. If so, then you not only know for sure the problem is the latest upgrade to phpbb but you can continue to run your installation under PHP 7 for the time being. This gets you back online. PHP 7 should continue to be a viable environment for at least the next couple of years.

or

2) Stay running under PHP 8.2 and disable/delete phpbb and see if Gallery starts running again. If it does then start searching internet archives for the previous version of phpbb and install it  and live without the latest version of phpbb (at least for now). As I recall, both Gallery and phpbb were running under PHP 8.2 until you upgraded phpbb.

The team at Dreamhost figured it out and fixed it.  You guys were right, it was a php and htaccess problem.  Thank you!!  .

"Hi Steve,

Gallery3 didn't support the latest version of PHP(8.2), so we downgraded the PHP version using the htaccess file. We noticed that this code in the htaccess file was disabled, but we've added it back, and now the site is running smoothly.

Thanks for updating us.

Glad to see there's another G3 user happily using it out there.

Most excellent.  I am fairly certain it did over write the htaccess file.  I will dig out an old one and compare.  I do not think it did anything to the php 8.2 as I do not have access to that and the server company had it preinstalled

Thanks

My previous setup was on a cpanel host.   My new host does not use Cpanel and the folder public_html no longer exists. So I can not help but wonder if the Gallery is looking for something in the public_html folder?.  I will do a backup and then when I have all the files do a search for those words and see what shows up.

Okay

I looked at the .htaccess files and can not find any difference from before the move.  Line by line they are identical.  That is the ones in the gallery folders.  Some of those in the Forum folders are different

The only line in the G3 Logs since the update is

<?php defined('SYSPATH') or die('No direct script access.'); ?>

I went back 2 weeks (a week before the move) and that is the same top line in every entry.

Steve,

Hmmm... a hosting service without cpanel is like a fish without gills. Since you just moved there and may have to start over with a reinstall of Gallery with the files you originally moved onto that server -- perhaps it was not the best choice to move to. Most good servers have cpanel or some other management tool. Maybe you should consider another. I have no affiliation with A2hosting.com, but they have been hosting my own Gallery sites for over 10 years and are fast, reliable, at the low end of the cost spectrum and even have live tech people you can talk to on the phone.

I'm just sayin'...
