Thanks to Jagan for pointing out an issue with the approval system for people requesting to become members of our group. I have just looked into it and discovered about 20 people who had applied for membership sitting in the "pending member" section waiting for Jean or myself to approve their request.  Neither Jean or myself ever received any notifications about these pending  requests as we usually do.

I apologize for this lapse. Something has happened to the googlegroups notification system -- I do not know why myself (or Jean, apparently) have not been receiving the notifications about new member requests,

In any case, I have just now approved those who have been waiting for membership  -- and I will continue to check in on a regular basis to take care of those who apply in the future. Hopefully googelgroups will get their act together and start sending out notifications to the group moderators again.

Glad to be in! Thanks!

I set Gallery up on Raspberry Pi, Ubuntu Server 20.04 and even Pi Zero. Thanks for maintaining a nice piece of software. I was planning on putting together current instructions for raspberry pi, or maybe a fully functional image file. I'll post when it's done.

Thank you for maintaining this software!

I contacted a couple of members, including Jagan, through the contact pages of the URLs of their galleries, as I needed to join this group because I have just a couple of weeks to upgrade my gallery and move it to a new server...

This was perhaps inappropriate behaviour but hearing that about 20 people were waiting, I'm glad I did it.

Better late than never...  :-)
I did have something to report but it was that long ago I have forgotten. Maybe connected with  search and then and error page but ok after refresh.
Nice to have G3 running again and I hope some of the the plugins will be updated one day in the future.

William,

Oooo... I would love to see those instructions and an full image implementation would be even better. I have just switched my personal computers over to Ubuntu/Linux Mint 20 after wandering in the Microsoft wilderness ever since Windows 1 came out in 1985. It's a refreshing change.

Damien,

What you did to try to get in contact with the moderators would have been fine in any case -- but yes, in this case it was extremely beneficial because who knows how many people would have ended up waiting for approval if you had not said something. I have submitted a bug report to Googlegroups about the failure of the notification system but I have yet to hear anything from them.

I had applied a few months ago when I had seeked help with migrating my Gallery 1 installation. I gave up and instead ended up updating all the php code manually to work with PH 7.x

So I'm still on v1, but that's not a big issue because I don't upload new pics there any more. It's just for preserving old albums. If anyone is interested in getting the updated v1 code, feel free to contact me. I have not updated all plugins, though. Just the basic ones I needed myself.

Apart from that, I'm probably unsubscribing again here because I'm not using v3.

Cheers,
Thomas

Thomas,

It is amazing that you managed to tweak the old Gallery 1 code to run under PHP 7.x -- I'm sure this could be very helpful for some people as a temporary fix just so they can preserve/access their old images. You can try sending your version as a .zip file  to this group, but I doubt that Gogglegroups will let it go through.

Of course, there is a really big issue with running version 1 (or version 2.3.2 for that matter) -- that version is almost 20 years old and full of security holes. Even if you are not actively uploading to it, just having it on your server creates serious vulnerability. An experienced hacker can use the presence of the old code to break into your server.

This actually happened to me last year -- not because of old Gallery code, but because I had stored a really old version of a CMS system on my server. I wasn't using it... had completely forgotten it was there. But someone used the presence of that old code to hack my server and made quite a mess of things -- I confirmed this with my hosting server's tech people that it was the old code which allow that to happen.
