Remote Image hosting

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has done any work on being able to display
images on one platform where the image files are hosted on another platform?

Specifically, I run a model club site hosting something in the region of
20,000 image collected from monthly model club meetings over 18 years.
We currently use Dreamhost VPS for hosting but has a hard limit of 30GB
for storage and we're curretnly up at 26GB, so sometime in the next
couple of years we will hit/approach that limit and there is curretnly
no reasonable option available to extend the storage space without
upgrading the entire hosting plan which will pretty much double the cost.

So the alternative I can see is to "archive" some of the older photos to
a cheap cloud storage platform and modify Gallery3 to recognise where
the image is hosted and handle it appropriately.

I've been doing PhP and Mysql development for over 20 years so I've got
no fear in those regards, in fact I built a Laravel front-end to the
club website with a custom admin interface to document the images as I
generally have 100 ish per month so simplifying the identification of
images has been made as simple as possible.

Before starting though, I thought I'd reach out to the community to see
if anyone else has done something similar before?

I have never tried! But this would be an interesting module extension to
develop that would add the ability to use a URL of a remote image and
display and archive it on a Gallery 3 site.

It looks like time to experiment!

By the way I love model building and I see some great examples done by
the club.

It sounds like a fascinating project that could be fun for those with the necessary coding expertise... but, if you wanted a quick solution:

Most big hosting companies -- particularly Hosting.com where BoxArtDen.com has been running without a single interruption for over 15 years now -- will migrate all of your old site over to theirs including all images. Often they will do this for free when you open a new hosting account with them. I know that Hosting.com has very generous limits on storage space... way over a measly 30 GB -- I believe there is even an unlimited option. I get no money for this recommendation, I'm just a very satisfied customer. And this approach would only take a day or two to implement.

I have a couple of suggestions for you. 

1. Linode offers dedicated hosting with 40 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM and 2 cores for $45/month, and you can add extra storage in 64 GB increments for $6.40/month. Full nightly backup is an additional $5/month. 

2. I had a somewhat similar situation with my web site, hopirockets.com. A few years ago I redesigned the site from Java/Gallery to Python/Django, so I don't use the Gallery modules anymore on the new site. I keep the last version of the old site at hopirockets.info with the Java/Apache code running on the Linode and the gallery part (php, apache, mysql, image storage, etc.) runs on a Raspberry PI Zero 2W with a read only 64GB SD card sitting on my desk. Apache handles the fetching of the gallery images from the PI and displays them as if they were on the Linode server. I don't add any images to the old site, so everything is static. I also use Zero Tier to create a free VPN between Apache on the Linode and the PI on my desk. Before Zero Tier, I just opened a port on my home router and used SSL.
