Hello!

The time has come to renew my hosting plan and I'm looking for suggestions that will work with 2.3.2 Gallery. (I want to keep it as a historical record. Maybe it's time to move on but for now, I like to keep the original format.)

I vaguely recall G2 requires some server level image processing software or plugins to function, which I discovered my current hosting company does not have... It's survived without them so there are a lot of broken thumbnails...

Anyway, I would really appreciate suggestions.

Damien,

Yeah, a lot of us would like to have been able to do that. But the bottom line is Gallery 2 -- and any version of Gallery 3 that is version 3.0.9 or lower -- simply will not run on servers that are using php 8.1 and higher. At this point, that is pretty much every hosting company out there. They *must* run php 8.1 or higher to maintain quality service and most of all secure service. So, say goodbye to good old Gallery 2.3.2 -- it had a great run, but it's done.

Agree with JR.

If you're keeping it just for nostalgia, then my recommendation would be to get an old and/or cheap laptop, install Apache and PHP 5.x on it, and just have it running when you need it.

I've never used or even seen G2 so no idea what it does or looks like. The images can, of course, be moved and put anywhere (G3, or whatever) - is it comments and descriptions that you're missing?  There is a module for G3 that did an import from G2.  No idea how well it works, if at all.  So, while your G2 installation still works, maybe do a quick blank install of the latest revival G3 version and try the import module.

For what is worth, back in the day I moved from G2 to G3 and it was painless and complete: comments, image and album descriptions, users... I don't recall a single snafu.

As said above, Gallery 2.3.2 can just work fine on php7.4 (which I still have) but I know 7.4 is too old, I will not bother going to 8.1 but they now updated to 8.2. Crazy
