There is an auto rotate module have you tried that? It sorts out all the Apple upsidedown photos. I usually rotate and edit photos before upload but this helped when a member uploaded from their Apple phone and most were upsidedown on the site but fine when opened directly on my computer.

I have it and the exif module already installed. Whether it is enabled or not, pictures rotated are squished and distorted. 

As a side note, the moduleupdater and moduleorder modules don't work in my installation.
