Hi Guys,

I'm hoping maybe on the off chance somebody could help me source 2 x
Celestion HF2000 diaphragms.

A long shot I know but the voice coils on both tweeters are cooked.

I'm in Perth Western Australia and would appreciate any advice or
assistance.

Cheers

flemo.

I don't know of any source for diaphragms, it seems unlikely that there
is a warehouse full of them anywhere. I would think your best bet would
be to try and list the alternative speakers which used hf2000 tweeters
and try to buy a pair cheaply, but beware, Google found the below
information....

"Single Celestion hf2000 tweeter/super-tweeter, 8 ohm version

I have just removed it from a Celestion Ditton 44 speaker, although I
think it is the wrong version for that speaker: other listings suggest 4
ohm version fitted to Ditton speakers

With mounting gasket, as shown and original perforated metal grille
covering the dome.

Vintage unit, first used around 1970-1, rated by many as the best
tweeter of this era, although it should not be used down to the more
normal 3 kHz crossover frequency, to ensure adequate power handling,
therefore not a suitable replacement for all tweeters

Excellent working order and condition

I measured it at 8.6 ohms

There are two versions of the HF 2000, 4 ohm and 8 ohm

5000 Hz crossover point in the Ditton 44, claimed range up to 30,000 Hz

Small 19 mm dome diameter, hence goes up into super-tweeter range

A version of the hf2000 tweeter was used in the Celestion Ditton 25, 44
and 66

also I believe other manufacturers speakers including Gale 401, IMF
TLS-80, Spendor BC-3, Rogers Export Monitor etc.

However, I do not know which of these speakers used the 4 ohm version
and which used the 8 ohm version.

It could be important to use the right one otherwise you could have too
high or too low an output level and also a shifted crossover frequency;
unless you compensate in the crossover.

You could also overload the tweeter, leading to failure, by feeding in
too much midrange"

Hi Mike,

Yes it's a real bugger of a situation and I'm sure many others are in
the same boat.

I have looked on ebay uk and seen a few complete tweeters. Although
they are expensive, it's hard to know which speaker they suit and they
may well also have the problem as mine.

I may have to consider a modern replacement tweeter but I shudder at
the thought of it.

It's early days though so I'll have to see what pans out.

Cheers, flemo.

Have a search in Aus for the 'HF2001' which superceded the HF2000 and was fitted in a lot of speakers including the later Celestion 400/500/600 range. 4 ohm version if possible just ask the seller for the readings. Here's a pair in Germany  http://cgi.ebay.de/Hochtoner-f-Celestion-Ditton-551-Paar-Pair-/380348140168?pt=DE_Lautsprecher_Martin&hash=item588e840a88 . You will at least keep the Celestion/Peerless sound combination.

It looks like many others are or have been in the same situation as myself regarding sourcing parts or other HF2000's tweeters.

I have seen the prices of secondhand units on ebay uk and I would pay that sort of money for new old stock, but the secondhand prices combined with freight to Perth pushes them well over $300.00 AUD.  That's quite a lot when you consider the AUD is trading at $1.06 USD!!

Can anybody provide feedback or information on the use of non-genuine modern replacement tweeters?  I'd be looking at something which would drop straight in and obviously be a match for the original spec's and sound.

Does anybody have experience with the Hiquphon tweeters, and if so which model?

Cheers, flemo.

The OW1 is a superb tweeter, arguably state of the art for it's type.  Note sensitivity is 87 dB, so typically no resistive padding required.  Expensive though.

If someone could get a Gale original hooked up to a parametric tester ( eg WT3), and publish the results, it would make choosing an alternative a whole lot easier.

Same goes for the woofers.

I have a new test rig coming in next month.

I’ll get the Gales on it for sure.

Reasonable price considering the second hand prices on e-Bay these seem new old stock with packaging. Three point face plate but the seller list the units as 8-Ohm units? I know there were 2 versions but had always assumed the 3 point face plates were intended for the Gales - unless Celestion assembled what ever stock they had left?

Thanks for the post I think I will try to get them been looking for
ages
I asked once before about the ohmage of the celestion HF 2000 used in
the 401A's but no one replied. Do our experts think they will do the
job??
Also I think I may need Lother's help to get them as I can't
understand German and log in to make a payment.
Would you be able to help Lother.? I'll try posting to you direct.
Thanks in advance
Mal
