HI,

I'm nearly finishing my 401 repair/restoration and I run tests pairing 401 to Rotel RA-870 BX integrated amp    .. 2x80w  at 8 ohm.
First thought was IT’S A LIVE (my Frankenstein Gale 401) sounds great -but the speakers where to
quiet - compared to my JBL L-15 ,  2 way speakers.

I think that Rotel can’t power them – or something is wrong with crossover?

Any thoughts?

Anyone running Gales with integrated amp?

What is the best amp (affordable) for 401??

My first thought was that the JBLs were much more sensitive. The manual (available at

http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Owner%27s%20Manual/L15om.pdf

says they're 87 db/1 watt.

Pretending that both speakers are 8 ohms, and seeing that 401's need 21 W for 96dB sound level., we can work out how loud the JBL's are with 21 W input

So 21W would produce more than 16W, and 16 W is 2**4 more than 1 watt, and so is (4 x 3dB) more power than 1W, or 12 dB more sound level. 87 + 12 -> 99

So the JBL's should produce about 99 dB with 16 W. Probably 100dB with 21W

So the JBL's *should* sound noticeably louder, but not substantially louder.

Maybe there's something else happening

Not sure where you’re located or your budget, but…

At the cheap end of the spectrum (and you’re in the USA), you might want to try something like this…

http://cgi.ebay.com/Harman-Kardon-3490-w-remote-2-x-120W-Stereo-Receiver_W0QQitemZ150408721736QQcmdZViewItemQQptZReceivers_Tuners?hash=item23050ef548

Basically you want an amplifier with at least 100 watts at 4 ohms…  more is better.   If the amplifier specs a rated power at 2 ohms (most don’t), you’ve got an obvious contender for the Gales.

Yes, through necessity (cost and available room).

I have only heard my GS401Cs running with my NAD C325 BEE [1] and the
John Shearne Phase 2 that accompanied them when I got them from a
friend.

Both amps are rated at 50W into 8 ohms I believe, and to me they sound
remarkbly good with both.

Could they sound better? Hard for me to say on account of my limited
frame of reference, and I must say I'd love to hear them powered by
something that the folks here considered to be a better match, but
it's unlikely to happen any time soon on my budget. I've looked into
used NAD power amps on eBay, but even they are a bit too rich for my
budget right now, so I guess I'll just have to settle for what I've
got, which is no great hardship!

I think most everyone is feeling the pinch worldwide right now, regardless
of how strong our politicians tell us about "recovery".

I think there are amplifier opportunities out there that just require a
little digging...
