Just picked up a pair of GS402. A little different to my restored GS401 pair. Still have leftover materials from first restoration. Plenty of filling to replace fibreglass stuffing. A pair of alternate tweeters if GS402 tweeters not working. The midrange speakers need new suspension. Woofer suspensions are possibly ok. I'll checkout crossovers; test components and then decide if upgrades are warranted. I'll likely replace wiring to drivers. I did this in my GS401s  and I think it makes for a significant improvement. Very nice stands came with the speakers so that was a bonus. I'll add some photos as the project kicks off.
Cheers all
George

Good luck to you George – hope it goes well.

Sadly my early chrome GS401s, serial numbers 786 and 787,  which I believe I bought in 1973 – the receipt and brochures are around somewhere…..remain a work of art, rather than the superb speakers they were.

Nevertheless, they are a classic work of art! I remember first seeing and hearing them in some ‘Hi-Fi Sound Exhibition in London, and bought them soon after.

Whilst I’ve promised myself several times that I was going to get them sorted – it hasn’t happened. Can’t see me getting round to it now – I seldom sit down and listen to music in the same way as I did 50 years ago,  though I can remember the superb delivery the Gale’s gave me in their early days! My ears probably wouldn’t now appreciate the quality and subtlety the Gales delivered – I’m probably just as well off feeding my 6 active JBLs nowadays!.

Regards to all

Bob

First step of project underway. Had spare mid range foam surrounds. A little large but trimmed 1mm off the outer edge and installed on the left hand Peerless K040 mid range driver. Pulled stuffing out above crossover. It's different to the fibreglass that was in my GS401Bs. But in poor condition so I'll replace later when the woofer surrounds are upgraded. The crossover at a glance seems ok; the horrible polarized caps 3.3uF and 4.7uF are present so will replace in the future. For now the box is closed up. All drivers working which is a bonus as I only paid AUD$300 for the pair including very nice stands. Now to re foam the midrange on the right hand speaker.
As previously reported by Tinhum in Dec 2010, the 402s have heavy duty cable from the crossover to the drivers. Validates my previous restoration of my GS401Bs where I upgrades the driver cables.

One question. I have a pair of new SEAS 19TFF1 H0737 tweeters. These are an alternate to the Celestion HF2000 as used in the GS401 series. Do I install them into the GS402s? The'll drop straight in to the existing cutouts, which have Philips AD0160 T8s. I understand the SEAS are a superior tweeter.

good luck. capacitors always worth replacing. i think 402s can sound better than 401s
others will know about tweeters (is Dave still around?), but if wiring is easy why not try them, after listening to the Philips...

I have to restore a set as well.  Does anyone have experience with using bextrene or another material instead of foam? It rots here.

Thanks,

John

Could someone tell me where I can purchase original black l grill fabric for my restore project, and if there is someone that can re-chrome the bases for a reasonable price.
Much Appreciated

Chrome plating is expensive so I doubt you will find a "reasonable price".

You might like to speak to local classic car nuts as if they need parts chroming they often get together with others that need parts chroming, as bulk orders can be cheaper to have done.
