Hi Guys,

I'm considering tweeking the crossovers in my Gale 402 speakers and
was looking for somebody with pic's of a standard 402 crossover (so I
don't have to pull mine out while I'm still listening to them) , and
list of values for all the inductors, caps and resistors.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers, flemo.

Hi Pete , I reckon you should get the rest of the system sorted before
tweaking the crossovers as it is too easy to mess up the sound of the
Gales.Have you discussed your plans with JB?

HI Gordon,

Yehh I'm aware of retaining the Gale sound and not stuffing it up.

But I was thinking maybe putting in some Obbligato caps which are
smooth, very open, and cheap too. If doesn't sound better then easy
swap them out.

Surely a 30 year old speaker xo could benefit from some modern TLC?

I will have a chat to JB as well. He has previously suggested
changing the tweeter too.

Well , got my big QSC 3500 amp running tonight ! A bit of a revelation to say the least . I've tried a few in the past - phase linear 400 , crown dc300 , Bgw 500 , Das 1400 all fairly recently and the crown was pretty good , especially in the bass dept , but the good old Albarry's always won out - but tonight I've got a problem - the QSC was better than the Albarry's overall and is the best I've heard on the Gales so far :- do I keep it at home and put the Albarry's in the cupboard ?! I can't not after all these years ! I'm heartbroken but the QSC was more dynamic and while it lacked a tiny bit in midrange detail , it was more engaging
And just as good on the top if not better - but the bass made stuff rattle in the room ! Played the same tracks on the same volume and the earth moved with that QSC . Richard Hawley' s rich voice had another dimension and the sound wasn't bright or harsh and tiring , if anything it was easier than the Albarry's - the bloody QSC was £100 !! What the hell is going on - do I eBay my other amps ? Don't know what to do folks - there must be some other old pro amps out there even better , I've heard the old Hill Audio stuff is excellent , I am really convinced now that with a little knowledge it's virtually pointless spending megabucks on an amp - my source at the moment is still my computer and the apple airport express , now direct into the QSC , the whole system has only cost me £240 plus the computer and leads - really amazing when you think about it . I'm going to have to have another long listen tomorrow - has anyone else had the same experience ?

Amen to that brother.
Best system I ever heard cost my mate about $4,000 - which is cheapas for the results he gets.  All vintage, all second hand.  But took him about 5 years mixing & matching to arrive at the end-point.
Value-for-money hifi satisfaction is what it's all about!

Hi Steve,
You  don't have to shelve any amps. You just do what I did and buy more Gales then use all the amps in a Home Theatre surround sound system! Sure you have to buy an AV processor with Pre-outs and have a preamp for running the Front L&R in stereo (seperately from the surround sound) but hey look on the bright side.......there's nothing like having six gales in your lounge room!
Regards,
Richard (Sydney, Australia)

Pat Quilter is a hell of an amplifier designer.  (He’s the Q in QSC.)

What’s even more interesting about QSC are their production facilities and methods.  We had an AES meeting there a couple of years ago.

The entire amplifier line is based on four different mother boards.

It’s a no-nonsense, let’s crank out thousands of amplifiers perfectly operation.

The new Albarry amps are £2349 per pair ! They are just coming on the market after a long exile ! The QSC series three cost £100 and seems to get better the more I listen to it ! It's interesting that pro amps are so abundant and cheap because everyone is going for powered monitors these days , plus the fact that with so many poor amps coming out of china it muddles the market allowing real gems like the QSC to be sold over here for peanuts . It seems that the 'in vogue ' labels like Lab Gruppen etc will attract good prices but the rest fall by the wayside . The QSC 3500 doesn't even have a fan to anno the home user , so with a couple of RCA to 1/4 " jack adaptors and four rubber feet you have a really good looking amp that does what it should on gale 401's - I guess it's very close to those SAE amps that Ira used to design them in the first place !!!

Good news - told you it was good. Can you hear the transformers hum? I
maybe have to put some rubber washers in mine. It hummed less before I
took it apart! Had to straighten case. Maybe your next move should be
a cd player and DAC. Micromega is very good for both. I describe the
QSC as smooth and effortless. The whole combination being as good as
what you put into it. So much depends on the recording. I'm using Van
den hul cables - best I found so far. Happy listening and happy hols
to all.

Hi Stuart
Yes I was expecting a hum and they do but it's not loud and preferable to fan noise anyway . As I said before , I was suprised how close it is to my Albarry's , very valve like , smooth but dynamic , it even gives the mids more attack and clarity - I wasn't expecting that , I was hoping for better bass like the dc300a but without the drawbacks - the downside is that I bought it for my workshop system and I don't think it's going to get there now !!
Happy christmas

Hi All
I have a lead on some Crown DC 300 A's at the moment Ex studio stuff so they have not been on the road.
Probably cost $200 Aussie each I'm getting one as a back up and if anyone wants one let me know
probably more an interest to the Aussie members as shipping the heavy buggers could be exxie but happy to sort that if anyone willing to pay freight .
Let me know if you want one and I can give you a bit of info as to there history etc  I may even get a better deal the more I buy.
A very merry Christmas to all of you

Yep it is good and as I said, I intended to use it for work - then I had an idea , the seller had more than one so I phoned him today and he's got 8 !! . So I'm having another one !! The one I had was a bit damaged and cost £100 but the others are all ok and they have been selling them for between £120 and £150 - yes they had quite a few - they hired them out but now they are on powered monitors - so I think we are looking at £140 each which is a real bargain - I'm going to get another after Christmas , so if any of you are interested let me know -- QSC 3500
Check them out , damned heavy though !

Hi Steve,

*sigh* I just can't keep up with you guys!

Seriously though, I am very pleased with my cheap and cheerful Behringer
A500.

It has one 'fault' worthy of note, and that is the piercingly bright
(now ubiquitous) blue LED that sits right in the middle of the unit to
tell me it is on (never mind the music issuing forth from the speakers,
eh?). When watching movies while piping the sound through the Gales it
is quite distracting, to the point where I have fashioned a cardboard
blank to obscure it.

Other than that I am getting better performance out the Gales as a
result of its inclusion. Tonally there's not a huge amount of
difference, but I guess that is to be expected when effectively using
the same pre-amp (in this case my NAD C325BEE with its power amp section
decoupled). However, there is certainly more grunt and that has
tightened up the bass no end.

I believe I've read somewhere that Behringer have a reputation for
reverse engineering expensive professional kit and then redesigning it
in Germany to be manufactured in China.

Hi Steve. Glad you like it. Have you reached the conclusion this is as
good as it gets? I don't know how this amp would stack up in
comparison to old superfi - Krell, Macintosh etc.
Nor how it might compare to a modern superamp. Maybe someone could
tell us.

I don't know anyone who has amplification in that league. I just feel
this as good as I need to go (heard that before haha!) Same goes for
the cables - I was lucky to get some cheap Van den hul from friend
but there must be better - however we may be at the diminishing
returns point of this audio game.

It seems sensible to buy a spare, or two! Probably cheaper than
repairs. I might pick up another if I see one cheap - however I'm
hoping this one will outlive me. Only the transformer hum from the
cabinet is the weak point but I agree its better than a fan. I don't
suppose anything of that power would be silent. Music soon drowns it
out.

Can't help but wonder if you are feeding it with a pc cd you must be
missing out on something though. Maybe you have a dac inbetween. Why
don't you buy all the amps and build a nuclear bunker?!! Poor bloke
who delivered mine could hardly carry it!

Been enjoying my rebuilt valve amp lately. Working great on original
45 yr old valves!! But need to fire up the Gales soon. Haven't tried
valves feeding the QSC.

Happy listening to all in 2011. Hope you turntable guys get sorted.
Glad I'm immune from those hassles!

I've got as far along the Hifi trail as I am able to afford - so it's been Cyrus , MF , Albarry ,Quad , Crown , Marantz , Phase Linear and quite a few others and yes it seems to be the best so far on the Gales . I have and have had many other good speakers but they don't last long and I'm near the stage where all my speakers and amps ( apart from the Albarry's ) are heading for eBay this year !!
I think think the big Mac and Krell amps will be as good and better but as with your cables , the diminishing returns rule dictates that it won't keep up with my fading hearing !!!
I keep my amps in a cupboard anyway and the hum is not heard , so all is good ! I'll let you know if I get my back- up amps !

Hi Steve - sorry to see your hearing is going. I'm not sure if the QSC
will make matters better or worse!! I always believe we can listen
longer to quality deafening sound as opposed to rubbish at high volume
- then the pain starts! I have been known to stuff my ears with
tissue paper at bad sounding gigs.

This hifi game has other factors than money alone. I reckon we all
have mates who have spent a fortune on lesser sounding systems. Having
said that I also have spent more than nessary on previous systems. Its
doubtful if I would have bought Gales without the benefit of this
group so its good some younger folks can tune in and save 40 years of
upgrading!

If we had purchased Gales new we would never have needed to upgrade -
thats quite a thought.

Hopefully we are not just a bunch of old guys - I'm 57 - does anyone
know the age of youngest member?

Hope your hearing lasts well into future

Just had a slight problem on my return to work this week - at the end of last year one of my workmates ( staff ) tried out my gales and big DAS amp in the workshop and wound it up until it blew ALL the fuses on both speakers - yes you heard it correctly - all four fuses !!! I've got a box of each at home so replaced them and pointed out the error of his ways politely !!! Interestingly I don't think they had ever been changed and after the shiney new ones went in I'm sure they sound better ? Crisper mids and treble with punchier bass - is it in my imagination ? Anyone else had the same experience ?

Not necessarily an illusion - better metal-to-metal contact with new
replacement fuses. Old ones probably corroded on the caps to some extent and
in any case simple twisting may freshen up the metal touch points. Better
contact = better signal transmission.
I have heard of some recording studios replacing fuses for every session -
just to make sure.

As to your workmate/staff's mis-usage - maybe replace him too?

Trouble is he's a good worker and was just thinking how good the sound was when his favorite choon came on the dab radio - an over enthusiast twist of the knob and ordinary speakers would be toast !!
Yes I think it's worth all members swapping fuses when you think all the signal flows through that tiny bit of wire !!

Hi
Just found that the chap that turned the amp up until his ears bled has also knocked out the peerless unit on one side swell as all the fuses !! Bit cheesed until I tried another driver in and it still didn't work - so whipped put the crossover and it looks like the 80 mfd cap has gone because the wax is discoloured - tried local suppliers today but couldn't find one of the same value - are the Elcaps still available ? A quick search on eBay didn't bring any up !

I reckon there must be something out there that would do the job. It's not a
bad idea to replace old electrolytics anyway especially after 30+ years.
Mebbe give the whole kit & caboodle to a tech for an overhaul?
But if you get stuck, I have two old 'chopped' 401b boxes (all drivers
replaced with ring-ins!) but that still have the original cross-overs in
them (I think - although the pots have been by-passed). I don't intend to
resurrect these speakers, so the x-overs might be of use in a
fall-back/desperate situation.
Cheers

There are various bipolar audio caps around but most are much higher voltages and so I presume they are fine to use but are better quality - I know that it will not affect the sound in all likelihood but it just feels wrong to replace one of a pair in one speaker only . There are plenty of good caps at audiocomponents.co.uk and even the cheap ones are higher voltage but it still feels better to replace them all - I still think it would be just to find an original Elcap if I could , otherwise while replacing the cap I'd want to upgrade all of them as you said and even hard wire and ditch the pcb and swap the resistors , even upgrade the wire and inductors while I'm fiddling !! But as they are just my workshop ones it seems a bit excessive and while I'm curious to know if it makes any different at all , it would be time better spent on some chrome 401's I think !

Think I would recommend that you take out your crossovers or wait for the
iMac to come back so you can check all your own values just to be sure.
These things seem to change from box to box. Certainly is the case for the
later 402s.

However, here are copies of four pics from the Gale Site, as provided by JM,
DS & timhum.

DS & JMs x-overs seem to be the same - five caps per crossover, measuring
4,6,7,60 and 80 uf
But timhum's US versions seem quite different - but maybe he combined caps
to get the values he needed.

Best of luck

Hi
Thanks for that - they came over on my iPhone really well .
They all look the same as on my crossovers luckily - it was the small 7uf cap I wasn't sure of . The big 6 and 4 uf caps are proving a bit difficult to track down - do you know what type they are and what will sound ok as a substitute ? I understand that if you use a higher voltage audio cap it should be ok but not sure about those alloy can caps - obviously I could just leave those but if they're cheap enough I'll swap them while the soldering iron's warm !!

Steve;
The correct values are basically 4,6,7,60 and 80 uf, Elcaps are hard
to find now but you should be able to find alternatives try
HiFiCollective. The American crossover is basically full of odd
components and equally built to a very bad standard so I would'nt take
too much notice of it, they are good for experimenting with because of
the crap layout. DS

Hello-

The onllne schematic shows all the caps are spec'ed out in uf, or microfarads, including the 4 and 6.

Best,
Dan
