Hi all.

First time posting here and pleased to be among fellow Gale appreciators. Just restored a pair of 401a's and took lots of pics while doing so. Can be seen here...
http://www.tirnahifi.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3014

I'm now looking for an amp to pair with them. Thinking along the lines of Luxman L525, Accuphase e-205 or 303x or the like. Any recommendations?

Best,

Terry

Nice job Terry, especially the chrome!

Mine are awaiting some new speaker cloth after a new kitten decided to
use them as a scratching post, so I am currently 'making do' with my
GS401Cs!

Well done on the restore, and the forum you posted on is great BTW.  You ask about amplifiers to use...  I know all the classic ones get mentioned but...

My Musical Fidelity X-A1 died with a blown transformer, so I just recently bought a brand new Roksan Kandy K2 BT amplifier.  About 250W into 4 Ohm and seems to have plenty of grunt.  Best I have ever heard my 401a's sound.  They can't half soak up the watts.  I had the volume up to about 50% the other day, in a room that although 20ft long by 11' wide, but is only about 7'6 high (it is a arched basement room).  The volume was well bearable, but the speakers truly snapped into a special groove.  Bit loud for guests mind....

The BT version of this amp has a bluetooth input available, that was not on my shopping list - but the latest Kandy version just came with it.  Interesting I have three teenage daughters and I find most nights, when they are doing homework, they streaming music from their Iphones to the hifi system.  So the Gales get more use than ever!  They think it is brill!

Many thanks Sean.

My lovely Croft Iosis (Glenn figures it's an up-market Series V), dishes out 30w plus of tube power, and has a very large and heavy transformer. The Gales are absolutely marvellous but I can't help feeling I'm only barely touching the accelerator! Very keen to hear what happens when they're partnered with something Ira would have recommended. Would love to try Lecson!

Thanks MLO. When you mention "the forum you posted on"... Are you referring to http://www.tirnahifi.org/forum/ ? Assuming you are, they're a great bunch of lads. Very welcoming, good craic and knowledgeable. If there's anything you need to know about computer audio, past, present and future, I can't think of a better place!

Appreciate the heads up on the Roksan. My heart has been taking me down the nostalgia route... Accuphase e-303 and Luxman L505 eg. But there's a roksan dealer nearby and I'll definitely give it a listen.

These Lenteks come highly recommended by many:

I believe that they are reasonably rare but they do come up periodically
- I have seen a few advertised for sale in the past few years.

I've considered one myself but am reasonably happy with my NAD C356BEE
and too much of a wuss to risk flogging it to buy anything older, having
previously consigned dead amps to the skip when they finally became
unrepairable.

Yes I was.  'twas very interesting and I picked up some very interesting ideas for moving digital.  An ongoing project of mine - it is not really as easy as you think adding hires digital to an existing system.  Especially if you want to do it once and preferably leave it alone for a long time.  Computer stuff goes out of date or is unsupported very quickly compared to analogue hifi.

On amplifiers... I was tempted to buy another old ebay bargain - very interested in putting a big Quad (606 or 909) into the rig.  But then I would have to choose another pre-amp and options were more limited when I decided I needed built -in Phono and a headphone output.  Mmmm, more boxes, cables, heat, clutter, wife acceptance and still the nagging feeling that in a few years will end up with possibly another broken, and hard to fix, amp.  So I went down the 'new' route and Roksan have a good long guarantee.  It is a lot of grunt for well under £1000. And everything I need built in to one box.  Never had remote control before - that's nice.

Care to expand on what you're doing with hi-res digital?
