MichaelC. Hall's Dexter is up to his old tricks in a new trailer for the upcoming ninth season of the Showtime series. Set to debut sometime this fall, the series will return for the first time since 2013 in a 10-episode event. After Dexter's disastrous series finale left fans feeling sour towards a series that was once widely loved, the return of the anti-hero has fans hoping that those mistakes can be rectified. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips is on board for the revival after departing during the show's fourth season, hinting at the series' return to its roots.

Hall is the only original cast member currently slated to reprise his role, but the series has added a few fresh faces that Dexter will be toying with in the new season. Clancy Brown will serve as Dexter's primary antagonist, while Jamie Chung is playing a true-crime podcaster. A brief teaser hinted at the series' snowy location, with Dexter moving on from his time in Miami and Oregon and taking up residence in upstate New York. How well he will fare there remains to be seen, but the latest teaser certainly hints that he has acclimated rather quickly.

Showtime posted a new trailer for Dexter's ninth season, once again highlighting the snowy locale. Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" plays over the clip, hinting at Dexter's internal struggle. As the camera zooms out, Hall can be seen standing at a window, the glass reflecting one of Dexter's victims tied up and struggling to get free. The clip ends with Hall smiling ominously at the camera, raising his eyebrows gleefully. Check it out below:

Although the new series looks to be quite different in terms of its location, it's clear that Dexter is still the serial killer fans have come to know and love. How much he's changed personally in the ten years since Dexter's original ending remains to be seen, but it's clear that he'll be feeding the Dark Passenger living within him. Chung's addition as a true-crime podcaster is an interesting wrinkle and seems to set her up as someone who could end up in Dexter's crosshairs at some point during the season.

Brown's antagonist will appear in the series as the mayor of Dexter's new town, but seeing as Dexter has faced some villainous killers before, the series should look to outdo itself here. When Dexter returns, the series will look very different and hopefully that's a good sign of things to come. Many fans are still hurting from the bungled series finale and this revival is the perfect chance to give Hall's titular character a proper ending.

Where was it filmed?

While the original eight seasons of the show filmed in the sunny locale of Long Beach, California (subbing in for Miami, Florida), the new episodes will have a notably chillier vibe as they filmed in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts (subbing in for Iron Lake, New York). Watch the official trailer:

Get ready for Dexter season 9, because our favorite forensic analyst/serial killer's story is continuing this fall. Yes, Michael C. Hall is reprising the role of Dexter and the Showtime series is picking up right where it left off. Dexter season 9 just revealed its release date and sneak peek trailer at Comic-Con @ Home.

Showtime previously released several teaser trailers that reveal what Dexter is up to in the current day (and what name he's living under). And there's recent big news: Jennifer Carpenter is reprising her role as Dexter's sister. Not sure how, since Deb was killed off in the series finale, but guess the writers will find a way!

The show, which ran from 2006 to 2013, followed the titular character as he worked for the Miami Police Department by day and hunted down (other) criminals by night. In the series finale, Dexter faked his own death and became a lumberjack in Oregon. The ending was universally reviled by fans.

We've known of the Dexter revival for some time. It was announced in October 2020, with Clyde Phillips returning as showrunner. The return of Phillips is welcome news for fans, as he left half-way through the show's initial run. It was around that time that many feel the show began its gradual decline.

Previously, Showtime released several teaser trailers for Dexter season 9. The first is set in a snowy upstate New York wilderness with a fire roaring in the backyard. As the camera zooms out, we see the back of Dexter (Michael C. Hall) with his reflection against the window. In the reflection, he looks despondent, almost uneasy. And in the bottom-right corner of the window, you can see another reflection, one of a person wrapped in plastic, with duct tape over their mouth, struggling to break free.

In the third teaser, Dexter/Jim is walking through town and being hailed by various residents with good cheer (one even calls him "Jimbo"). But they don't see the gleam in his eye when he spies a sharp hunting knife in a store window.

And the most recent teaser, posted on Father's Day, is a sad one. A photo of Dexter holding his son Harrison is tossed into a fire. Is this a sign that father and son could reuite? After all, Harrison was taken by Dexter's serial killer girlfriend Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) to Argentina to hide from law enforcement.

He will be joined by original cast member Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan, Dexter's sister. She died in the 2013 series finale, so the exact terms of her appearance in season 9 are unclear. But Carpenter herself confirmed her return in an Instagram post.

There are a slew of new cast members joining Dexter season 9. They include Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption), who will play Kurt Caldwell, the main villain. Julia Jones (The Mandalorian) will play Angela, Iron Lake's chief of police. And Johnny Sequoyah (Believe) plays her daughter.

Not a ton is known about the Dexter revival, but a synopsis released to The Hollywood Reporter states, "10 years after Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the revival sees the character now living under an assumed name in a world away from Miami."

And prepare to say goodbye as some fan-favorite series come to an end, including This Is Us season 6 and The Walking Dead season 11. But the cycle of TV life is bringing new series like Wheel of Time, The Book of Boba Fett and a Lord of the Rings show.

We don't know why the title is so similar to the Pretty Little Liars sequel, and we wish the show could be named something cooler, like Dexter: First Blood or Dexter: Dark Passenger. Fortunately, the title doesn't matter as much as the actual content of the series. The Paramount+/Showtime series follows a young Dexter Morgan as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. There, he'll meet familiar characters played by a new cast. Read on to learn more about what we hope will be a bloody good series, including who is playing young Dexter, when the show will be released, and what it's about.

Paramount+ with Showtime has revealed the first images of the new series, including a classic shot of Dexter looming over a body that's been strapped to a table. It looks like things were always the same, even when Dexter was younger. You can check out the images further down in this article. Expect more news, maybe even a premiere date, when Dexter: Original Sin holds its panel at Comic-Con on Friday, July 26, at 5:45 p.m. PT.

Showtime and Paramount+ haven't revealed when the new series debuts, but filming kicked off June 5 in Miami. The first season will consist of 10 episodes. We think the show would make a killer October watch if filming finishes in time. In fact, if the Powers That Be can get Original Sin together for an Oct. 1 launch, that would mark 18 years to the day since Dexter's original premiere.

As the title implies, Dexter: Original Sin is all about Dexter learning to control his killer urges in a more, erm, positive way. In the original show, we learned Dex made his first human kill in 1991 when he was 20 years old. At the time, a nurse was slowly poisoning his adoptive father, Harry, and she became his first target. Although the first-season flashback episode introduced the canon, we never saw the kill.

They'll likely recreate that scene in the new show. The story picks up in 1991, when Harry was still alive, 15 years before we first met Dexter in Dexter. Harry works at Miami Metro and will help Dexter manage his Dark Passenger (which eventually leads Dex to becoming the Bay Harbor Butcher). That means we should also see the creation of the Kill Room and the origins of The Code and, of course, learn more about Dexter's blood sample slide ritual.

There's ample opportunity to go into Harry's psyche here, too. We know he eventually takes his own life after witnessing Dex do his murdery stuff, so his arc could be an interesting one. After all, we've only ever known him through flashbacks and via Dexter's memory. The new show is also an opportunity to see how Dexter became so liked by his co-workers and to explore their early relationships. Maybe we'll also learn why he always brought in those donuts.
