Some strange happenings with my GaiaGPS on my brand new iPhone5s

1. Wildly inaccurate positioning that usually corrects itself with WIFI enabled (can someone please explain the 'crosshairs' icon which is sometimes a solid color, then turns red if tapped, then changes shape and permits the bearing to adjust to my position)
2. Won't record a track, despite the timer elapsing. The tracks do, however, go into my saved data and are shown as various brightly colored neon boxes that say "track has not been recorded" when I tap on them to view.
3. All trip stats remain at zero after pressing record, which does show me a timer elapsing, despite my original position having been found and following me during my walk. Says "not enough data to graph".
4. GPS accuracy shows non-existant without Wifi enabled (no color on the line that usually shows red, green, yellow shades given strength of the signal).

From what I can see, my GPS must be functioning, albeit strangely. since I have had the bearing follow me as I walk around the neighborhood. That being said, something is wrong if I'm unable to record and have no GPS accuracy once I leave the Wifi environment.
Furthermore, nothing will record even in the Wifi environment, citing the same "not enough data to graph"

Airplane mode is off
Iphone version 9.0.1
Background App refresh is on.
Location services on (GaiaGPS 'always') Have turned this option on and off, as well as restarted GaiaGPS, re-installing GaiaGPS and powering off and restarting the iPhone - no luck.
Reset Network Settings

None of the above have corrected the problem.

Please help
