The Ascent measurement seems to be wildly off. I live in Indiana and
on a 10 mile hike is has shown a total ascent of over 20,000 feet. The
last hike was 3.8 miles long with a recorded ascent of 3,985 feet. I
don't think so.... Not on Indiana at least. :-)

Hey Marc,

What version of the app are you running... the latest?

We had a problem with the ascent measure that we patched in version 6.0 or 6.1 (we're on 6.2 now).

If you think it's still bugged since that update, please let me know.

Also, if you can send me a track you recorded that reports the bad ascent numbers, that would help me figure it out.

Regards,
Andrew

I'm afraid I must report a similar problem, though not nearly so
extreme. Gaia's not dealing well with elevation for me. On a hike
yesterday (also in Indiana) that started and ended in the same place,
the beginning and ending elevation readings differed by nearly 50
feet. Moreover, Gaia showed the hike as starting nearly 100 feet
higher than actual elevation, and some of the peaks were higher than
any elevation in the area by 150 or more feet.

While these disparities are nowhere so distorted as Marc's, they
undermine the value of the app, at least for use in this very hilly
area of southern Indiana.

I was able to fix the readings for my own purposes by loading the
track into Google Earth and having it correct the elevation settings
to ground level. The resulting readings were strikingly different.
It would be nice not to have to take this extra step.

Nevertheless, I'm very pleased with this app, and the more I get to
know it, the more I appreciate it.

Thank you.

Best,
Jonathan

p.s. - I'm running version 6.2 on an iPhone 3GS. I can send you the
original and revised gpx files if that would be useful.

Hi Jonathan,

I'm sorry for the delayed reply, I didn't see the emails to this list for a few weeks.

Two notes on this:

1) I do think the ascent algorithm we use needs to be fixed again, and we're looking at that for this release.

2) To some extent, GPS elevation just isn't very accurate, especially not compared to the Digital Elevation Model that Google Earth uses. So, we'll never be able to give really precise elevation data, without using non-GPS data.

Andrew
