I needed to free up space on my iPad.  Gaia GPS was using 2.9 GB, so I went into the app and deleted all my maps.  I have no tracks and only a few waypoints left as saved information.  Yet, when I go back into my iPad's usage screen, it's still using 2.9 GB.  I quit/restarted the app and it's still the same.  How big should the app be with no saved maps?

Thanks Ruthie, clearing the cache worked.  This was for Gaia GPS on a 2nd iPad that wasn't being sync'ed to the cloud, so I didn't need to worry about syncing it.

Hi Morrie,

Thanks so much for using Gaia GPS!

It is possible that you just need to clear your cache in the app under "Reset" in the Settings menu. Since you have a lot of data to clear, it will likely take a few minutes, so just let the app sit until it notifies you that the cache is fully cleared.

If Gaia GPS is still taking up a large amount of space and you are sure you have deleted the data, I suggest making sure the information you want to save is synced to gaiagps.com, deleting the app, and re-installing it fresh from the App Store.

It looks like you have a lot of data saved to your account on the site, so make sure you toggle those maps, tracks, waypoints, and routes not to sync before re-syncing your device (as shown in this article from our Knowledge base) or you will start a large process of syncing the data on the website back to your device.

If after clearing the cache and fresh-installing the app you are still experiencing space issues, please shoot us an email at sup...@gaiagps.com and we will troubleshoot with you further.

Kind regards,
Ruthie Irvin

Hi Morrie,

I'm so glad that worked for you!

One other possibility that I failed to mention before was that most likely the app was closed before the deletes of your data could complete. The launch of the app very possibly triggered the continuation of the data deletion. Since you had so much that needed clearing, it would have taken a while to process the delete, but waiting with the app open for the cache to clear would have allowed for this process to finish out.

At any rate, I'm very happy to hear you recovered the space on your iPad. If you experience any other issues, please don't hesitate to reach back out.

Warm regards,
Ruthie Irvin
