Hi,

When creating a waypoint, its altitude is not saved. Am I missing something our is there data not stored?

I'm using

Hey Patrick,

On Android, only waypoints that you mark at your present location have altitude data attached. The altitude is gleaned from the GPS, and there is no on board way to calculate altitude for arbitrary waypoints.

On iPhone in the next version, we added a feature that looks up altitude for waypoints via a USGS server, which triggers on waypoint creation, or the next time you get online. This feature will make it to Android in the near future, but I don't have a date I want to give yet.

Regards,
Andrew

This brings to mind: did you ever consider the practicality of supporting DEM?  Are there servers that let you download it?  Even for determining the altitude at the current location, DEM data is typically even more accurate than elevation gleaned from a GPS.

Personally, I don't use the altitude information from Gaia very much -- I trust the contour line on the map more than I trust the GPS altitude -- so I'm not necessarily suggesting supporting DEM.

We looked into adding support for DEM to allow offline elevation lookup.  I wrote to the code to do it, but files are too large to make it practical, a 1 degree square is about 45Mb and they don't compress very well.  The USGS does put the data online, but they don't make it very convenient to download.  The USGS does provide a web service for looking up elevations that uses multiple DEM sources to provide to the highest resolution and accuracy available.  In 7.2 waypoint elevations are looked up using that service, and in 7.3 elevations are looked up when creating a route so the route has an elevation profile.

Hey Patrick,

Sorry, that's a bug then, and we can reproduce it. We'll fix that for the next update.

Actually, that's the problem! I'm creating waypoints by saving the current location (map menu -> waypoints -> save my location). When I tap on the blue pin, the pop-up shows the waypoint name, coordinates, distance and heading from current location, but not its altitude. Is there some other way to get the altitude of the waypoint?
