I have GaiaGPS for Android. In an attempt to free up system memory, I moved all my saved maps to the SD card (just created a top level folder called "Gaia," and moved the main map folder with its subfolders). I then went into the app's settings, chose "custom storage location," and pointed it to the folder I had created on the SD card. Unfortunately, it couldn't find the maps. I tried several folder levels, but no maps appeared. Moreover, when I tried the option to download new maps, nothing happened except that the app lost its menu buttons and could not get them back until I removed it from memory and restarted it.

To fix this, I assume I should probably delete the app and reinstall it. However, I don't want to lose my saved tracks and maps. I'm afraid that if I sync with Gaia Cloud, it will think that I have intentionally deleted all my maps and will delete them from Cloud as well.

What is the best way to fix this problem?

Thanks.

I managed to get my maps to show again by choosing Settings/Storage/Move to External Storage. This also seems to have fixed the problem of disappearing menus when I try to download a map. Map downloads work now.

However, when I look at where the maps are stored (the Root folder listed in Settings), they are still on the device rather than on the SD card. The root folder is /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.trailbehind.android.gaiagps.pro. The map tiles are all on the device rather than on the SD card. So I'm back to where I started, with Device Storage nearly full, and a very empty SD card.

Also, when I try to sync with GaiaCloud, it doesn't work. Settings/Last Sync either spins forever or says "Sync incomplete." Can someone help?

Thanks.

So I succeeded in moving the maps to my SD card. I used Miles on the Galaxy s5, and simply ignored the Storage/Root Folder setting on the Gaia app. That Settings,is now incorrect, but Gaia is still able to find the saved maps. The only remaining problem is that I still cannot sync with Gaia Cloud. The "wait" icon spins forever, and if I stop it I get a "sync incomplete" message.

I sure wish someone would respond to this thread rather than my having to use trial and error.

That is "MyFiles," not "Miles."

Hi Doug,

Thanks for writing in with your issue and for your patience these last few days.

I filed a bug report with the engineering team about the storage and sync issues you are experiencing and will contact you again when I know what other information to collect from you for troubleshooting.

My best,
Ruthie Irvin

Hi Doug,

I’m so sorry for the issues you have had getting your storage squared away.

The app is unfortunately not designed to have the underlying data moved around in the way that you’ve described, but getting your sync with GaiaGPS.com squared away should resolve the space issue for you.

Once your sync issue is resolved, you can toggle your data not to sync to your device from the website to save space but still have access to it for the future.

To sync, open this URL from your device:

gaiagps://sync.forceallpush

(You must click on the link from your email or from this Groups page to force the sync. If you type the URL into your browser, it will search Google rather than load.)

After you open that link, the settings menu of your app should launch and display the sync attempt. Leave that screen open until the sync shows the current time next to Last Sync. If you continue having sync issues at that point, please email me at sup...@gaiagps.com and I will troubleshoot with you further.

Kind regards,
Ruthie Irvin

Hi Doug,
I have also tried to do something similar.  ie after I've downloaded maps and used them but no longer actively needed them  I've wanted to offload them to my pluggable  sdcard for future use rather than downloading again from the web or syncing.  The reason for this desire is that when  I go out camping/RVing/boating  I may not have good  web access.  If I've anticipated this and already saved the maps on the external card then that problem is resolved.

Unfortunately, the assumption on most phone apps is that you are always web connected so the apps are built around that notion.  What I am wanting to do could probably be done as a hack.  I've tinkered with file managers as you have done with some occasional success.  However, the problem I have observed is that after the maps have been moved the gaigps  database index may think that they are still there.  After moving them you can go into gaigps and remove the maps  since they are no longer where gaigps looks but then the problem is that when you copy them back to the old location that gaigps looks at they are not recognized due to the index being invalid.  I tried numerous hacks to fix this but so far I have not succeeded.  There may be a way to move/copy  that index along with maps but I haven't figured that out yet.  To do this may require rooting or reinstalling.

For me,  ideally,  I'd  be able to sync with my laptop rather than the Cloud  then I could use the laptop as backup storage.  I suspect I'm going against the popular trend  of putting everything on the Cloud but sometimes having everything on the Cloud is just not the best solution especially with an   app that  may be used in the middle of nowhere where no Clouds can be seen (pun intended).

have fun
