Greetings -- I'm evaluating Gaia GPS for students using smart devices as part of our overseas programs, and am taking it for a test ride this coming month in southern Africa with a BadElf GPS on an iPhone. Is there a ready way to delete downloaded maps? I'm seeing that some of them take a bit of memory, and want our students to be able to delete them after their overseas experience just in case their smartphones need to free up space...couldn't find a ready soln in your manual nor on the app.

Many thanks,

Jim Proctor

Hi,
It's in there in the help menu under "non-obvious features" "Swipe the rows of your Saved things to delete them one-by-one." Hit the save menu, click the globe with the down arrow, left swipe whatever mapset you want to delete and a delete button will appear. Hope this helps. Jason.

Hi Jim,

Yes, there is a way to delete downloaded maps.  Go to your "Saved" tab and then find the map on your saved maps list that you would like to delete.  Then swipe to the right across the name of the map, and a "Delete" button will pop up.  Tap "Delete" and your saved map will be deleted.

Since you are planning to use our app in Southern Africa, please check out our additional user added sources if you have not already.  Simply open this link in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, and tap on the sources you would like to add.  Gaia GPS will automatically open and load your new map source.  For Southern Africa, I would recommend adding the ESRI World Topo map source.  If you are going to South Africa, I would also check out the HikeBike.de map source, especially if you are going to be traveling in cities as well.

Please let me know if that solves your issue or if you have any other questions, comments, or concerns.

Savannah

That is all fine and good, but DELETE does not work! I have about 20GB of maps, and my ipad has run out of storage space. How do I delete these maps (AND GET THEN TO STAY DELETED), after the app incorrectly tells me they are deleted when they are not?

"Delete" didn't work for me, either.  As I recall, the maps were deleted from the listing, but memory was not released.  So, I had to delete the app, then reload it - without any saved data, or course.

This was on an iPhone 4 and iOS 6.1.

Hi Ray,

I'm sorry about that Ray.  As I said above, deleting and reinstalling will take care of this issue.

If you want to save your tracks and waypoints, you can back them up with GaiaCloud first before deleting the app: http://www.gaiagps.com/wiki/gaiacloud  I'm very sorry that you lost your data.  We are working on this map deletion issue and hope to have it fixed soon.

Thank you for letting me know about GaiaCloud.  I will have to try it.
