I have an iphone 3G and I'm considering using Gaigps.

I have previous experience with Garmin, Lowrance, Fugawi and
Oziexperlorer. Up till now I've used the Ique 3600 garmin and fugawi
features.

Is it possible to make my own maps on my own PC, ie not be dependent
on a server in the cloud somewhere.? Ideally, I'd just use
Oziexplorer if Gaigps supports one of the formats that Ozie exports.

tks
Don

Hi Don,

I am not very familiar with Oziexplorer, but I did some quick Googling and found that Oziexplorer exports in .gpx format. Gaia GPS can import .gpx and .kml files.  For more information on importing and exporting with Gaia GPS check out this entry in our manual: http://www.gaiagps.com/wiki/how_to_import_gpx

We also have a feature that allows users to create their own map sources, our Gaia GPS map warper: http://warper.gaiagps.com/ which is particularly useful if you want to use only your own sources.  However, Gaia GPS allows you to download maps locally to your phone for offline use, so you would not be dependent on cloud servers, as long as you download the maps you need before you head out.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, comments, or concerns about Gaia GPS.

Best regards,
Savannah

tks Savannah for the prompt feedback.

Once I get my itunes sorted out I'll be buying based on what I've seen
so far. As I mentioned as an old time dedicated gps device user and
map maker there is a lot for me to learn and there's a lot out there
too. So its a matter of me finding the right start link.

I looked at map warper and that looks good. However, I would want
to install my own local warper tool on my windows pc. , I think the
dedicated gps guys call this georeferencing. It looks like it can be
downloaded from MIT but that may take me down a complex path so I need
to find someone who has already done that to make sure that I don't
have to become a java expert to do it

tks
don

Hi Don,

Sounds good.  Once you get Gaia GPS working for you, please tell me what other programs you end up using with Gaia GPS to geo-reference.  Thank you for your feedback and let me know if you come up with any other questions, comments, or concerns about Gaia GPS.

Best regards,
Savannah

sure will, I appreciate the personal attention.
Just to be sure when I say georeferencing it is the same thing that
they call rectify, right? I'm an EE and rectify just doesn't seem
like the right thing to call it. People get set in their ways :)

Hey Don,

Yep, that's right. Rectify = geo-reference.

I imagine rectify is a term used by cartographers, but I'm not even totally sure it wasn't just a choice of the author of the open source code.
