Hello,

Any plans to increase the 100,000 tile limit? I just got a spiffy new
dual-core phone with a ton of internal storage and as a result have
gigs of space on my SD card. I'd love to permanently save a large
area surrounding where I live for emergency use. I'd also be happy if
I could save a bunch of tiles to a spare SD card (I have an extra 16GB
card lying around and would be happy to buy a 32GB card if I could
keep a spare one with map tiles) that I'd pop into the phone if I
needed it.

It's my understanding that at high resolution, which I want, 100,000
tiles isn't actually that huge of an area. I'd prefer if the limit
were dictated by available storage.

100,000 tiles covers the entire states of NH and VT. (It will take
hours to download 100,000 tiles.) Is that really not big enough? In
3 or 4 such downloads, you could do the entire state of Utah. I'm not
aware of any upper limit to the total number of tiles you can
download.

I'd like to map roughly a circle of about 400 miles centered on my
home city.

So is it only 100,000 tiles you can DOWNLOAD at a time, but you can
store as many as you want?

Yes. The only limitation is the storage capacity of your device. Gaia
GPS is smart enough to not download tiles again you already dowloaded
before, so you can safely select overlaps while downloading. Gaia GPS
loads the downloaded maps automatically and seamlessly. You will not
even notice you have multiple maps while using the app for tracking or
navigation.

So you guys say you can download 100,000 tiles at a time. on my
iphone, i have to limit the map size to 10,000 tiles to download it.
Is there a setting for this? Is it the map type im using? Im using the
ESRI USGS Topo maps. These maps are just under 200 Mb's. I would
love to be able to download 100,000 tiles at a time.
thanks

Hey everyone,

We're back in town :)

Regarding the current 10,000 tile limit on the topo map downloads, we'll probably increase that to 100,000 in the next release. We pushed it down to 10K from 100K because now that we are running our own topo server, we have to pay for all the tile downloads. We were a little afraid it would be overwhelmingly expensive, so we limited the tiles per map. After we look at the data for the month though, we can probably bump it back up.

FYI, it costs about $500/month just to store all the map data, and then outgoing bandwidth costs money too. We're expecting it to cost about $1000-2000/month for now, but we shall see.

You guys have been great!

We were truly amazed by the level of support that was offered user-to-user on the list, and it made our vacation much less stressful :)

I'm guessing you'll get an initial flurry of downloads, triggered by
the auto-redownloading of deleted maps for existing users, and then it
will stabilize to a more reasonable number. In my case, for example,
it took a good 30 hours to download everything I had before.
