Is it possible to import a kml file displaying imagery. I tried the
directions, but the kml file will not open in astro, it does not seem
associated with Gaia gps

Please try the latest version of the Android app that just went live a couple days ago.

From the Saved Screen (while showing the Track table), hit the main hardware Menu button.

There is now a native option to import files, and you should be able to grab the KML.

Andrew

KML only works for Andriod, and not for iPhone, yes?

I just wanted to determine if overlays will import from KML files. Do
they?

I am asking because I've taken a bunch of older 15-minute maps and
have geo-referenced them as overlays in Google Earth. I have also
done the same with Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for a number of smaller
towns or villages.

It would be pretty awesome to take my wifi Android tablet with an
internal GPS out into the field and be able to use those overlays.
And in case you are wondering why I've done this, I am a metal
detectorist. I love taking many of the pinnacles of technology worth
hundreds of billions of dollars and scaling it all down so that I can
find a dirty, old penny or two in the middle of a field.

Yes, both the Android and iPad/iPhone apps import KML and GPX, though the Android app does it a little better for KML right now.

I've tried to import tracks (both .kml and .gpx) on my droid
incredible, but it doesn't work. I've tried it via the import function
and through Astro. When I try it in Gaia, the files don't show up in
the folders. When I try it in Astro, it says, "file type .gpx not
found."

Any help?

Hi Dan,

In the latest version of the app, there is a native import function in the app. Please try that:

1) From the Main Menu, go to Saved.
2) Select the Tracks table.
3) Press the Android Menu button, and choose the import option.

Andrew

I've done exactly that, but the files simply do not show up where I've
put them. It's weird, because, as an experiment, I exported a track,
and it shows up in the folder, but when I put a new track into the
same folder, I can't see it.

Similar story for me, however I figured it was just because I was using the trial Android version.  I can see files that I save, but anything that I add are effectively invisible (at least files with a KML extension are like that).

I would be happier if the MIME worked and I could just double click a KML file or select Gaia as the program to open it.  Then if it failed to open the file, I would at least know that it had tried.  As it currently stands, it is more like a riddle without any feedback or explaination.

I've attached an example KML file (2nd attempt now - turns out the 4mb is the limit on size) that is similar to what I've tried to import.

Tim,
I even upgraded to the paid version, but still can't see the files.
Tried both .gpx and .kml. My files are simple tracks and less than
10k.

Hey Tim,

When you try and import this file, have you already unRARed it?

Hey Dan,

OK, we will look into it. The Android import code is fairly new and still has some kinks.

Ok, I still cannot see any files to import, so I will explain all of the details.

First, I am using a Samsung Galaxy Tab (wifi, 16gb) with Android 3.1.  It is not rooted and the GPS is not turned on.  I have the trial version (3.0) of Gaia installed.  It can pull maps from the internet without any problems assuming I have a wifi connection.

I am trying to use a .jpg overlay which is defined and geo-referenced in a KML file.  The KML file is known to be working within Google Earth.

Anyhow, I copy the KML and data files across wifi to a folder on my SD card called DOWNLOAD.  I have gone in an renamed the KML file to "temp.kml" in the hopes that a shortened name without spaces or other characters would help.

Once the files are in place, I launch Gaia GPS Lite 3.0.  I click on SAVED, click on the TRACKS tab, and then click on the menu button in the upper right-hand corner and select IMPORT TRACK.  I browse to the DOWNLOAD folder where I have stored the KML file.  It is never presented as a clickable object.

Which to me isn't surprising since a KML file is not a track file, but this is how you've told me to import a KML file.  I am assuming *.GPX is the extension for track files because renaming the file from TEMP.KML to TEMP.GPX made it show up in the import listed, but once imported, it did absolutely nothing (the map was pre-positioned over the area where the overlay should appear and it did not change, nothing was added to the list of tracks, nothing changed that I could see).

I've gone quite a bit beyond casual testing because I would like for this to work.

The app will only import very simple KML files.

GPX files are composed of lines and points, and to some extent you can convert between GPX and KML.

Now that I more understand what you are trying to do, I guess I would just say the app won't handle a file like that right now.

I'm sorry for all the trouble!

Let me know when you think you have a fix for this issue. My tracks
are extremely simple--just lines and points, as you say.
Thanks.

Hi Larry,

I'm sorry the importer isn't working for you. To try and get this file to work, I tried importing your track by first converting it to GPX. This file imports OK for me after that.

Does that look like it should when imported: https://www.dropbox.com/s/otk4z4u62x0873g/pauite.gpx

As for addressing issues with the importer in general, we have made many improvements over the last year, and more files and larger files work. It won't be today, but we'll determine why this KML file doesn't work and fix the issue.

We also have just implemented a local GPX importer that will do away with some other outstanding issues, besides just being convenient. Look for that in the next version - that will be a relatively minor part of 7.0.

Regards,
Andrew

p.s. I used this website to convert the KML for my workaround: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input

Can you please tell me if this issue has ever been resolved?  I see that these posts are over 1 year old so I would hope the issue has been resolved.  That being said, I am having the same problem today with my paid version.  I do not see the .kml file in the directory when i am trying to import it.  Can you please advise?  I am attaching the file I am trying to import.

Thanks,

Hey Randy,

Yeah, our exports will really only do simple lines and points, and I don't know if I can make any promises about importing complex KML files right now. That's quite a job - sort of have to write Google Earth from scratch :)

Andrew

I was just trying to do the same thing as bdog_999.  On Google Earth you have the ability to few older imagery for the same location.  I moved the slider over to 1998 and it was one taken late fall that was in black and white.  Contours, old logging roads, and the creek were all visible.  Excellent view and I wanted to use that image instead of the latest image file that Gaia loads. I've tried several other GPS android apps, still prefer Gaia over the other ones.
