I bought GaiaGPs v4 several years ago for my then new HTC MyTouch 4G, and loved it - except for the wildly optimistic distance counter. It consistently thought I had travelled 15-20% further than I actually had. I upgraded when v5 came out, only to find that my phone couldn't cope so I had to revert to v4.

Anyway, I recently bought a new Galaxy S4 and downloaded v5.4.8 and thought I'd give you some feedback. Overall it's great, works very smoothly on the S4 and is easy to use. Best of all, the mileage agreed with my trusty Garmin eTrex very closely, so I'm much happier now! However I do have a few negative comments, I'm afraid.

1. The user manual does not agree with the software, unacceptable imo. Actually it's hard to check what version I have as there's no 'About' option in the menus. I had to go into App Manager to see that I have 5.4.8. Settings -> User Manual also says 5.4.8. If that's intended to show my current version, it's misleading as I assumed it means the versin of the User Manual. In any event, the screenshots in the manual are different from what I see. E.g the main menu button is 3 horizontal lines, not a little GaiaGPS icon. Worse, the manual talks about a 'new track' button in the 'How to Record Tracks' section, but there is no such button for me, just a single button that says "paused" at the top of the Trip page. When I tap it I get Cancel/New Track/Resume, which gives me what I want, but is not very intuitive, I prefer the idea of a New Track button, which should offer to save the previous track.

2. Minor, but I think the GPS status pop up should show the error valie, i.e. +/-10 or whatever

3. the instructions on How To Change the Stats on the Map don't work for me. Thr blue tab is in the middle, not the left as shown, and a long press does nothing. Someone else commented that having the track recorder button colored black on dark gray is not great, and I heartily agree! I can't read it at all in bright light and have to guess at its state. Perhaps make the background a different pale color depending on the value - light green or blue for recording, light red for paused. Just make sure the black text shows clearly! I would really like to be able to change these stats.

4. Photos. I'd like to be able to long press on a photo to make it full screen, it's annoying to have it shrunk down into the dialog. I'd also like to be able to export the photo to the phone's gallery. Actually I expected the photos to show up there and was confused when I couldn't find them! I had to hunt around with a file manager to track them down. It would be great if they showed up as a separate album with all the features of the native gallery.

Having said all this, I really like this app! Well worth the measly $5 I paid years back - you should have a donate button, I would happily give you more! One of the strongest features is your support; your responsiveness and obvious enthusiasm take this app to another level.

cheers

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your notes. I added a few comments below.

In general, there is now ongoing Android development, and one of the three people doing support, Dave, is solely focused on Android. Dave is updating the manual as part of that, and should be able to better keep up with changes as we continue development, and improve stuff like the recording button.

Thanks Dave :)

Andrew

Thanks, accuracy with GPS is a difficult thing. It both varies with the hardware and with how we construct estimates.

1. The user manual does not agree with the software, unacceptable imo. Actually it's hard to check what version I have as there's no 'About' option in the menus. Working on it :)

True, that'd be good to do eventually.

3. the instructions on How To Change the Stats on the Map don't work for me. Thr blue tab is in the middle, not the left as shown, and a long press does nothing. We'll fix that up.

4. Photos. I'd like to be able to long press on a photo to make it full screen, it's annoying to have it shrunk down into the dialog. Probably other fish to fry first, but I know what you're saying.

Thanks, glad to have you all these years :)
