The announcement provided below is from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. While the initial guidelines focus on residential new construction, they create a welcome precedent of statewide consistency that hopefully will eventually extend to the multifamily arena. To review the guidelines themselves, please visit http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/GreenBuilding/Residential/Guidelines/default.htm

Statewide Model Residential Green Building Guidelines

In response to requests from local jurisdictions and other interested parties, the CIWMB has provided a set of model green building guidelines aimed at the residential sector. These model statewide guidelines were developed for the following reasons:

  • To provide local jurisdictions with "plug-'n-play" tools to implement a residential green building program without the need to devote scarce resources for developing their own program.
  • To provide a common standard that can be used by jurisdictions throughout the state without causing builders the headaches associated with requirements that vary by jurisdiction.
  • To aggregate several varying residential guidelines in order to achieve greater simplicity.
  • To provide guidelines developed by an independent source.

Latest Draft

The latest draft of the statewide model guidelines consist of two parts—the guidelines and a checklist—and are available for download.
