Architects and Engineers respond to Katrina Hurricane
For immediate release,
Architects Without Borders is facilitating a training for architect and
engineer safety assessment volunteers interested in going to Louisiana
and the Gulf Coast to provide support to affected
jurisdictions with damage assessments and to collect data critical to preparing
advance logistics and planning for recovery and reconstruction. We are working
with the Office of Emergency Services (OES) and Jim Barnes, Disaster Assistance
Program Specialist II who oversees the Technical Assistance Programs in the
Response and Recovery Division of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services
for the State of California.
While at the time of this notice an official response from the Governor's
office is pending, AWB is preparing and will be sending AWB teams of qualified
professionals to areas affected by the Katrina hurricane starting on September
8th, 2005.
Training will cover ATC-20-1 and ATC-45 guidelines (see http://www.oes.ca.gov) as prepared under the
OES Safety Assessment Program (SAP). The training is aimed at professional
engineers and Architects prepared to commit to a minimum 1 week assignments.
Please inquire in a reply to craig.w...@tlcd.com
or at 707.823.2724 about possible training date(s) and to receive guidelines
and printed materials.
Training will also prepare volunteers in damage and safety assessment and
qualify volunteers to participate in California
disaster response activities through registration with the Governor's Office of
Emergency Services for the State of California.
For those interested in going to New
Orleans as part of an AWB team, advance registration
and coordination with AWB is required.
We are working with various divisions of Office of Emergency Services in the
affected Gulf Coast region to determine logistics,
coordinate team activities and to determine the necessary security clearances
and activities consistent with ongoing recovery efforts.
We will also be providing GIS support for immediate and long term
response.
