Virtualization technology has been developed for many years and more and more companies have realized the advantages of virtual environment over physical environment. IT administrators need to get new knowledge to manage virtual environment.

On a physical machine, hard disk is used to store applications and other data and on the virtual machine, it is the virtual disk that stores the data. User can use it to make backup or migrate data. Virtual disk is not hardware like physical hardware, it is just a file in the folder of VM.

In different virtual environment, you can find different formats of virtual disks like vmdk virtual disk in VMware environment, vhd virtual disk in Hyper-V environment, xva virtual disk in XenServer environment, qcow2/raw virtual disk in KVM environment, ect.

Virtual disk manager is used to manage these files like renaming, converting, cloning, virtual disk. Virtual disks exist as different formats of files in different virtual environment so some virtual disk manager can be used only in single virtual environment and some can let you manage multiple kinds of virtual disk. You should know what can they do and select the proper one for your virtual environment.

VMware virtual disk manager, vmware-vdiskmanager, can help users manage virtual disks in VMware Workstation, ESX/ESXi, etc. It can help users create, convert, resize, rename, relocate, and defragment with scripts.

Hyper-V Manager is often used to create and manage the entire VMs but you can also use it to export and import Hyper-V virtual disk. Just right-click the virtual machine, export the entire VM and then find the virtual disk in the folder.

Unlike VMware and Hyper-V, KVM is an open-source virtualization solution and its users often manage the virtual environment with scripts like virsh command. There is also Red Hat Virtual Machine Manager to help user create and manage VMs with user-friendly GUI.

KVM virtual machine often uses qcow2 or raw format of virtual hard disk. If the virtual disk needs to be imported to other virtual environments like VMware or other virtual disks like vmdk file needs to be used in KVM environment, users can use qemu-img to convert the virtual disk making it compatible in the new environment.

Vinchin Backup & Recovery is a professional backup and disaster recovery solution for multiple virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, XenServer (Citrix Hypervisor), Red Hat Virtualization, Oracle Linux Virtualization, etc.

As explained in this forum post, the virtual disk manager is tied to the defrag service. My Windows 7 machine disabled the defragmentation service right after it detected it runs on an SSD following a migration.

With Disk Management you can create, attach, and detach virtual hard disks. Virtual hard disks (VHDs) are disk image file formats that have similar functionalities to a physical hard drive and are designed primarily for use with Hyper-V virtual machines.

VHDs appear just like physical disks in Disk Management. When a VHD has been attached and made available to the system for use, it appears blue. If the disk is detached and made unavailable, its icon reverts to gray.

Just a few hours ago I was able to repair my corrupted vmdk with the vmware-vdiskmanager / R "Path to the VMDK File". It worked like a charm, my VM started to launch fast and stopped BSODing. It looks like for some reason it got corrupted again.

But now running vmware-vdiskmanager / R "Path to the VMDK File" just prints an error in the command prompt: SSLConfigLoad: Failed to load OpenSSL config file.

Googling this phrase returned exactly zero results.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated, thank you!

Case solved. The error SSLConfigLoad: Failed to load OpenSSL config file is just console trash and should be ignored. When it doesn't output anything else, it means that the disk doesn't require repairs.

If you use a file management feature of the host OS to move a disk image to a new location, run the VBoxManage modifymedium --setlocation command to configure the new path of the disk image on the host file system. This command updates the Oracle VM VirtualBox configuration automatically.

You can copy hard disk image files to other host systems and then import them in to VMs from the host system. However, some Windows guest OSes may require that you configure the new VM in a similar way to the old one.

Storage devices like USB flash drives, CDs, DVDs, SD cards, etc are welcomed in saving massive data. However, an error like Virtual Disk Manager the device is not ready Windows 11 sometimes appear when you trying to access data from these devices. When it happens, it means the disk shows "Disk 1 unknown not initialized" or "Disk 1basic online, unallocated/RAW", which prevents you from doing anything to the drive.

When you forget to initialize a new disk, it cannot be recognized by your Windows, then it shows as unknown not initialized, unallocated in Disk Management. In such a case, you will receive the message saying Virtual Disk Manager the device is not ready Windows 11. To fix it, you just need to initialize the disk first.

Step 2. Right-click the target disk that is not initialized, and choose "Initialize Disk". In the Initialize Disk window, tick Disk 1(the disk is not initialized), select partition style (GPT or MBR), and click "OK" to start the operation.

However, Disk Management sometimes may fail to initialize the disk. So I recommend you employ the best free alternative - AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard. This is a powerful and practical disk manager designed for Windows 11/10/8/7. It can perfectly initialize the disk to the proper partition style you like. Here is the free download button and stepwise to initialize the disk:

If you encounter Virtual Disk Manager the device is not ready Windows 10 because Disk 1 shows basic online and unallocated, you can try creating a new partition with the unallocated space. But if there are important data on the disk, you can try recovering the lost partitions first.

If you are confused with these long command lines or think it's complicated to convert file systems with CMD, you can try the free partition manager AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard we have mentioned above.

With the graphic interface in this software, you can clearly know the situation of your disks, so that you can format the RAW partition to FAT32 or NTFS without any hassle. During the whole process, you just need to make choices rather than inputting the command by yourself. So, there is little chance to make mistakes.

Virtual disks are encrypted containers which provide access through a mapped drive letter to the files contained within. You must specify a maximum size for the encrypted container when it is created.

If you have removed a Virtual Disk from the Virtual Disk Manager or if you have introduced a Virtual Disk file from another system there are two methods to add the Virtual Disk to the Virtual Disk Manager list of virtual disks.

You can use a Virtual Disk container within a Network Folder. The limitation of a Virtual Disk in shared environments is that only the first user to mount the Virtual Disk gets read/write access, subsequent users get read access until all users have un-mounted the disk.

It's not letting you "online" the disk in the host OS because it is in use by a guest OS. That was the reason that you had to take it offline in the host in the first place, to ensure that only one OS has it mounted at a time.

When assigning a USB drive to a virtual machine, the host lose control over it. After all, a USB device can be assigned to one single machine (as a side note, USB is quite difficult to virtualize, so this situation is not going to change in the near future).

Like Disk Management, it allows you to partition hard drive, format/shrink/extend volumes, perform MBR2GPT conversion, etc. Additionally, it also enables you to check disk health, convert NTFS to FAT, recover data from hard drive, and more.

I then ejected the drive and reconnected it. The access light flashed about twice a second for maybe a minute then went off. During this time Drive Manager showed nothing mounted then, after the access light went dark, an uninitialized disk was shown. Attempted to initialise this gave the message "Virtual Disk Manager: Incorrect Function".

Thanks, I shall wait.

This is on a Dell XPS 15 7590.

(I also have access to a Raspberry Pi if I need to DD the disk or anything similar. There's a (downvoted) reply on -to-initialize-unknown-disk-in-windows-10 which suggests that, but I'm reluctant to try that without understanding why it was downvoted. Surely if the Ventoy install could corrupt something it follows that WIndows /can/ access it?)

Right clicking and selecting the option to initialize the disk gives me the option for MBR or GPT. Either choice gives me the message "The device is not ready". Both drives are 1TB, SATA, and used (from two different sellers). I am using a USB to SATA adapter that I regular use for SSDs but I have also attempted to connect it directly to my desktop PC and see if a live USB of GParted can do anything.

The Logical Disk Manager (LDM) is an implementation of a logical volume manager for Microsoft Windows NT, developed by Microsoft and Veritas Software. It was introduced with the Windows 2000 operating system, and is supported in Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11. The MMC-based Disk Management snap-in (.mw-parser-output .monospacedfont-family:monospace,monospacediskmgmt.msc) hosts the Logical Disk Manager. On Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, Microsoft deprecated LDM in favor of Storage Spaces.[1]
