Hi Firegoose users,

Firefox has put out yet another major version release. Extensions have
to specify the maximum version they are compatible with, so I've taken
the radical step of specifying * for that. That used to be
not-allowed, but it seems to be working, and I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that it will continue to work with subsequence upgrades.

As always, let me know if there are any problems. Thanks,

- Chris

I'm having trouble connecting to Gaggle in Firefox 8. I have both
Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10. It pops up a window with the head
[Javascript application] and says 'failed to connect to gaggle'

I'm a researcher at PNNL and our software BRM is supposed to connect
to Gaggle. We have done massive updates recently and BRM will no
longer connect to Gaggle. But since we can't get Gaggle to work in
Firefox either, its hard to tell which side is having the issue.

Thanks!
Sheena

Hi Sheena,

Here are a few things to try for troubleshooting Firegoose.

1) Make sure Gaggle itself is working. Go to the "blank slate"
page:
http://gaggle.systemsbiology.net/2007-04/blankslate.php

Start a Boss and a Sample Goose (down at the bottom). Click
"Clipboard" on the Boss and, in the Sample Goose, click "B"
for "broadcast a list". Some genes should show up in the
clipboard. If you start 2 sample geese, you can broadcast
from one to the other.

If this doesn't work, the issue is probably with making
socket connections. Firewalls or OS config can cause this
to fail.

2) Start Firefox. Google for "test java applet". You will find
several options, including this one:
http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

Go to that page. This will tell you if the Java plugin for
the browser is working properly. This usually works on OS X
and Windows. Some Linux distros ship their browsers without
a Java plugin. Search for something like "install java
ubuntu firefox" to find recent instructions specific to the
distribution you're using.

3) Start Firefox w/ Firegoose installed with Boss already
running. This gives the best chance to connect. The red
indicator at the top-left side of the toolbar should
turn green, and Firegoose should show up in the Boss's
list of connected programs.

You can test Firegoose by clicking the "B" in the Sample
Goose again. Namelist(8) should appear in the data chooser
on the Firegoose toolbar. Try broadcasting to EMBL STRING.

Please let us know how that works. I can confirm that Firegoose works
with FF8 + Java 6 + WinXP, and FF8 + Java 6 + OS X 10.6.8. I have
heard of problems on Linux, mainly involving getting the Java browser
plug-in installed properly. Our ability to test different combinations
is limited, so we rely on bug reports for users.

I hope this helps. Please let us know how it works out.
