Hello friends! I am trying to get ramped up on Gaffer, but am having trouble getting started. I am unable to utilize the view port. I have tried setting the editor focus to: focus node, node selected, and pin select node. I would greatly appreciate any advice to help me start.

Hi Riley,
From the screenshot it looks like you're doing the right thing so maybe there's a conflict with your system that's tripping up the viewport. When you set focus on the Sphere node, do you see any errors in the shell that you launched Gaffer from? Some more info about your system might be helpful as well, what sort of GPU are you using?
