Thanks Murray, glad you liked the video.
There were allot of rough edges - although not really with lighting/rendering.
One of the things we struggled with the most was the edit process. For various reasons the edit continued to change throughout the episodes production, and we never really had a good way to propagate these edit changes back to CG.
This led to all sorts of problems, many of which only became apparent on final assembly, which was always very late because of other problems around our edit workflow.
As far as things to improve in gaffer:
We were dealing with allot of shots in each gaffer scene. we started out having a gaffer scene for each sequence - but pretty soon we moved to having just one gaffer scene for each episode.
Because of this it often got a bit confusing as to which shot/sequence you were working on. We would put backdrops all over the place showing the context, but didn't feel like the best approach.
I think some kind of HUD would be helpful - the option to overlay some data over the panels.
It would also be good to have better options for including images and notes in the graph. We had shot thumbnails that used the node icon, but its not the easiest to setup. would be nice to have a dedicated image display node or similar.
A native ffmpeg node would be amazing.
more format support would also be great - pre converting files in maya in order to bring stuff into gaffer feels wrong.
Anyway gaffer is getting better all the time and we noticed lots of improvements during production (I tried to keep us on the latest version most of the time.)
